Be sure you complete all SIX steps of the assignment.

Grading Criteria

  • This is an informal assignment. You are practicing using the terms and paying attention to detail.
  • All responses must be in your own words, must demonstrate your ability to correctly use the formal art vocabulary you learned in the module, and must accurately reflect the content of assignment materials.
  • None of the questions below will ask you to analyze or interpret the paintings’ meaning or purpose. Therefore, you should not include what you think the paintings mean or are about. You should only be DESCRIBING the painting using the elements and principles of design. Say what you see within the paintings and use the visual arts vocabulary.
  • This is not an essay assignment. Do not include any extra material (e.g., introduction, conclusion, florid sentences and overstatements, unnecessary asides, etc.) in your submissions.
  • This assignment does not have a research component and you may not use any outside sources. You do not need to know anything about the paintings beyond what’s been provided to complete answer the questions. Any use of outside sources will result in an automatic zero on the entireassignment.

Submissions must demonstrate evidence of basic proofreading. Submission may include some errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, and mechanics, but the errors should not distract from your descriptions and observations.

Step

Watch the video below. It will walk you through the process of DESCRIBING a work of visual art. Use it as a model to follow for this assignment. A commenter has provided this list of principles and elements of art they describe and the time stamps where they appear. https://youtu.be/sM2MOyonDsY

Follow this link to look at Gentileschi’s Self Portrait as the Allegory of Painting. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/52/Self-Portrait_as_the_Allegory_of_Painting_%28La_Pittura%29_-_Artemisia_Gentileschi.jpg/1024px-Self-Portrait_as_the_Allegory_of_Painting_%28La_Pittura%29_-_Artemisia_Gentileschi.jpg

Spend time looking at the image. Zoom into the image to see close-up details. It will be helpful for you to write down any thoughts, impressions, and observations during this process. I’ve included painting’s dimensions below to help you imagine what the painting might like in person. Remember that proportion and scale are significant elements of design.

Artist: Artemisia GentileschiTitle: Self-Portrait as the Allegory of PaintingYear: 1638–39Medium: Oil on canvasDimensions: 96.5 cm × 73.7 cm (38.0 in × 29.0 in)Style: Italian Baroque Genre: Self-Portrait

Step

Open a new word document and carefully and thoroughly answer the questions below about Gentileschi’s Self-Portrait as the Allegory of Painting. Remember, you’re only using the visual arts vocabulary (the elements and principles of design) to DESCRIBE aspects of the painting. You should not include any elements related to what you think the paintings mean or are about. Say what you see; the more specific details you include, the better. Use the visual arts vocabulary.

  1. What was your initial reaction to the painting? Do you like it, why or why not?
  2. Does the piece bring to mind any of your own life events or memories?
  3. Are you curious about the person depicted, explain?
  4. What specific part of the painting were your eyes drawn to the most? What element or principle of design did Gentileschi use draw your attention to that part of the painting.
  5. Is the painting realistic or abstract? Explain your choice.
  6. Is the painting idealized or naturalistic? Explain your choice.
  7. Describe the painting’s color palette.
  8. Doe the painting feel static or dynamic? Explain what lead you to this conclusion?
  9. How has Gentileschi created balance in the painting?
  10. Describe how Gentileschi uses areas of high and low contrast to create visual interest.
  11. Which shapes do you see? Remember to note both actual and implied shapes.
  12. Describe the implied textures you can see in the painting.
  13. Describe the actual texture of the painting.
  14. Can you see brushstrokes? What kind of energy do they have?
  15. Describe the mood of the painting.
  16. How does the painting make you feel, and what parts make you feel the way you do?
  17. Based on your observations, your descriptions, and the title ALONE, what do you think Gentileschi wanted to communicate to the viewer, and what do you see in the artwork that makes you say that? DO NOT LOOK FOR THE ANSWER. I want you to come to a conclusion on your own based on the work that you have done.

Follow this link to look at Wiley’s The Two Sisters. Spend time looking at the image. Zoom into the image to see close-up details. DO NOT LOOK FOR THE ANSWER. I want you to come to a conclusion on your own based on the work that you have done.Step

Once you’ve answered the questions about both paintings, answer the compare/contrast questions below.

  1. Contrast Gentileschi’s use of color with Wiley’s use of color. How do these differences affect how you engage with the paintings?
  2. Wiley’s The Two Sisters is very large while Gentilischi’s painting is smaller in scale. How do these differences affect how you think about the women depicted?
  3. Gentileschi has painted herself in the act of painting, turned away from the viewer, while Wiley has painted two women who have been posed and presented to the viewer. How do these differences in the representation of the figures affect your thoughts about them?
  4. Which painting do you prefer and why?
  5. What has the process of looking at and describing a piece of visual art taught you about the visual arts?
