Case Study: GlobalTech’s Ethical Challenge
GlobalTech is a multinational company that produces medical devices. Recently, the company expanded
into the Middle East and Asia. While the expansion looks promising, several ethical challenges have
emerged:
1. Employee Engagement: Many employees in GlobalTech’s European branch feel disengaged
after layoffs. Absenteeism is rising, and some employees say they no longer trust management.
2. Corporate Social Responsibility: GlobalTech has been criticized for focusing too much on profits
while ignoring its responsibility to the community and the environment. Activists demand that
the company adopt a triple bottom line approach.
3. Stakeholder Conflict: A new device launch is delayed because a small lab report showed possible
health risks. Shareholders want the product launched quickly to recover revenue, while
consumers demand stronger safety testing.
4. Global Business Ethics: In one Asian market, senior executives are pressured to give “gifts” to
local officials to secure licenses. Some managers argue this is part of the culture, while others
insist it violates GlobalTech’s code of conduct.

Short Essay:
1. What steps should GlobalTech take to re-engage employees and rebuild trust in management?
(Hint: consider drivers such as involvement, information sharing, and fair rewards) [3 Marks]
2. How can GlobalTech balance profit goals with its ethical responsibilities to stakeholders? Apply
the triple bottom line (economic, social, environmental) and stakeholder theory. [4 Marks]
3. Should GlobalTech allow gift-giving in countries where it is part of local business culture? How
can the company respect cultural differences while still following universal ethical standards
(e.g., UN Global Compact principles). [3 Marks]
