Research
Before you complete the detailed instructions in the courseroom, first review the specific
community health concerns or health needs below and select one to be the focus of your
assessment. Each of these health concerns has broad implications not only for the individuals
directly affected but also for the community at large in terms of healthcare costs, societal well-
being, and overall quality of life.
• Cyberbullying: Cyberbullying ivolves the use of digital platforms like social media,
messaging apps, and websites to harass, threaten, or humiliate someone. It can include
spreading rumors, sharing private information, or sending threatening messages.
o Potential Health Impacts: Victims of cyberbullying may experience anxiety,
depression, and low self-esteem. The constant nature of online harassment can
lead to sleep disturbances, academic problems, and in severe cases, suicidal
thoughts. The anonymity of the internet can also create a pervasive sense of fear
and mistrust in online communities.
• Substance Abuse in Adolescents: Substance abuse among adolescents involves the
misuse of drugs or alcohol by individuals typically between the ages of 12 and 18. This
can include experimenting with, regularly using, or becoming dependent on substances.
o Potential Health Impacts: Adolescents who abuse substances are at risk for a
range of health issues, including addiction, mental health disorders, and
developmental problems. Substance abuse can impair cognitive and social
development, leading to academic difficulties and strained family relationships.
Long-term use can result in chronic health conditions and increased risk of
accidents and injuries.
• Elder Abuse: Elder abuse refers to any form of mistreatment that results in harm or loss
to an older person. This can include physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, as well as
neglect and financial exploitation.
o Potential Health Impacts: Victims of elder abuse may suffer from physical
injuries, chronic pain, and psychological issues such as depression and anxiety.
The abuse can lead to a decline in physical health, increased risk of
hospitalization, and even premature death. Social isolation and mistrust of
caregivers or family members are also common consequences.
