Caring for Chinese, Filipino, & Vietnamese Populations

“Hypertension is one of the most common chronic diseases in China. Over half of Chinese elderly people have hypertension, and for those aged 80 years or over, the prevalence reached 90%” (Hua et al., 2019). Comprehensive and holistic approaches to conduct a cardiovascular risk stratification are necessary to accurately and efficiently manage hypertension. Elder Chinese individuals are more at risk for developing hypertension and should be taken into consideration when assessing a patients risk. Also, high sodium diets, low potassium diets, overweight, obesity, alcohol consumption, mental stress and lack of physical activity also contribute to development of hypertension. Many Chinese treatments utilized for preventing and treating hypertension include Moxibustion ,acupuncture, cupping, quigong, and tai chi. Moxibustion “involves the application of ignited mugwort directly or indirectly at acupuncture points or other specific parts of the body to treat or prevent diseases” (Wang & Xiong, 2013). Quigong is an exercise for posture, coordination of different breathing patterns, movement, and meditation (Wang & Xiong, 2013). Tai Chi is a conditioning exercise that was originated in China and is known for its graceful movement.

Filipinos are more inclined to seek help from friends, family, and community leaders vs seeking professional help. It is said that Filipinos have “colonial mentality in which they have an automatic and uncritical rejection of anything Filipino and an automatic and uncritical preference for anything American” (Litam & Chan, 2022).  This way of thinking within the Filipino community has lead to culturally specific stress. Although their stress may be high which increases the likelihood of unfavorable health behaviors, Filipinos attitudes towards seeking professional help is not favorable. “Although qualitative studies identified resilience, coping strategies, and self-reliance as barriers to help seeking its also important to note other barriers include stigma, fears of being judged, concerns of being labeled crazy, shame, embarrassment, self-blame, and negative connotations on family or culture as commonly endorsed barriers” (Litam & Chan, 2022).

Vietnamese Americans are more inclined to utilize folk medicine due to it being more accessible as it is cheaper, it is culturally significant to them, they are more comfortable with the folk practices, and they can be more effective treatment for them at times. For severe and chronic conditions, herbal teas, soups, pils, powders, or extracts are utilized (Nguyen et al., 2016). Also, they predominantly consume a diet high in raw, dried, and fresh herbs thought to have health protection quality, as well as health tonic products that are mostly herbals, manufactured and packaged, and are claimed to improve general health. Similar to Chinese, Vietnamese Americans utilize acupuncture, massage, herbal medicine, and deep breathing as forms of treatment as well. Other more Vietnamese based traditional healing practices include wind snatching, wind scraping, cupping, bloodletting, and finger pressure. Wind snatching is based on the belief that toxic wind causes disease. The practice of wind snatching is when someone uses their fingers to pinch and snap away the skin or wind scraping in which they use a coin to scrape the skin and the purpose of this is to act as a counter irritant to the distress the toxic wind has caused (Nguyen et al., 2016).
