DOL Project theme/topic(s):
Outer Space

BULLETIN BOARD/WALL DISPLAYS

Large group activity of the student’s mural. The students used stickers, paint glue etc for things that they would see in outer space.

DRAMATIC PLAY

I changed the dramatic play center to a space station. Children dressed as astronomers and astronauts. Children pretended to be at the Space center getting ready for take-off. They made sure that everything was ready to go. They wore vests, jacket hats, and an astronaut suit. The car seat was a pretend rocket.

ART/ARTIFACTS

We created a name rocket with stars around it. This activity taught children to use their creativity while learning about the constellations and writing their names.

BLOCKS/SENSORY

I created this outer space sensory bin to invite students to engage their senses and curiosity by touching, feeling, and observing different textures, materials, and objects.

SCIENCE

We made moon cookies for science. This was a small group science activity. Even though there are 8 phases of the moon the students learned 4.

WORD WALL/ ENVIRONMENTAL PRINT

Each day I put up new words on the wall and introduced those words to children. We went over the words during large group.

BOOKS

I set up a tent and put books on the inside so that students could go inside of the tent and read books

There’s no Place Like Space

Little Planets

Planets

Moon Pie

The Wind and the Sun

LANGUAGE PROPS AND ACCESSORIES

I created a game called beginning sounds and rhymes. The students went up in space with the lights off and picked up as many cards as they could. Once all the cards were up, we went back to the carpet. If the students picked letter card, they had to make the sound, if they picked up a rocket, they had to say a word that rhyme with the picture. If they had a picture word, they had to say the word and name the beginning sound. This was a small group activity.

LANGUAGE/WRITING CENTER

Children explored the space word cards with pictures. This prop taught students how to not only write words but spell them as well.
