Coaching Policies Handbook

Assignment Overview:

As an aspiring Athletics Director (AD) at either the high school or college level, one of your key responsibilities is to ensure that the coaching staff is well-supported, informed, and aligned with your institution’s goals, mission, and values. A comprehensive Coaching Policies Handbook serves as a vital resource in establishing expectations, standards, and practices for your coaches.

For this assignment, you will develop a Coaching Policies Handbook suitable for distribution to the coaches in your department. This handbook will outline various policies, guidelines, and best practices that an AD would want to communicate to coaching staff, ensuring that all parties are operating under a common set of expectations.

Assignment Guidelines:

1. Handbook Content: Your Coaching Policies Handbook must include, at a minimum, the following sections:

Introduction/Overview:Provide a brief overview of the purpose of the handbook, the role of the Athletics Director, and how the handbook will support the overall mission of the athletic program.

Philosophy of Education-Based Athletics:Summarize the philosophy of education-based athletics, focusing on the benefits of athletic participation in student development, both in scholastic and collegiate contexts.

Expectations for Coaches:Clearly define the expectations for coaches in areas such as:

  • Professionalism, conduct, and ethical behavior.
  • Commitment to student-athletes’ academic and personal development.
  • Adherence to institutional policies and compliance with governing bodies (e.g., NCAA, state athletic associations).

Coaching Responsibilities:Outline the specific responsibilities of coaches, including but not limited to:

  • Practice schedules, game preparation, and communication with athletes.
  • Ensuring safety and well-being of athletes.
  • Recruiting (if applicable) and retention of student-athletes.

Communication and Relationship Building:Discuss how coaches should communicate with their athletes, fellow staff members, and the Athletics Director. Highlight the importance of building and maintaining positive relationships with athletes, assistant coaches, and other staff.

Handling Parents and Program Boosters:Provide strategies for effective communication and relationship management with parents and boosters, emphasizing conflict resolution and fostering a supportive environment.

Legal Liability and Risk Management: Discuss key legal issues related to athletics, such as student-athlete safety, discrimination, and compliance with Title IX. Provide guidelines for coaches to minimize legal risks.

Public Relations and Social Media: Outline expectations for coaches regarding media interactions and social media usage, including the handling of public relations issues, maintaining a professional image, and promoting the athletic program.

Budgeting and Resources:Describe how coaches should work within budget constraints, manage resources responsibly, and apply sound budgeting practices (e.g., zero-based, incremental, etc.).

Crisis Management:Develop guidelines for coaches on how to handle crisis situations (e.g., injuries, controversies, or emergencies) in a manner that protects the institution’s reputation and ensures the safety of athletes.

2. Format and Structure:

  • The handbook should be professionally presented with clear, well-organized sections.
  • Use headings, subheadings, and bullet points to make the handbook easy to navigate.
  • Include a table of contents for easier reference.
  • The content should be written clearly and concisely, using appropriate language for your intended audience (coaches).

3. Length: The handbook should be approximately 10-12 pages in length (excluding the table of contents and any appendices). You may also include any additional appendices if you feel they are necessary for a comprehensive presentation of the policies.

4. References and Citations:

  • Cite any sources you use in your research, including textbooks, academic articles, or reputable websites.
  • Follow APA formatting for citations and references.
