Art 130- Color Wheel Assignment

Now that you have read about color and the other formal elements used to create art, it is time for you to create

your own color wheel to demonstrate your understanding of color blending.

Step 1

On a piece of UNLINED white paper, draw a circle that touches the sides of the paper. This should be a real

circle (not lopsided and not an oval)- I recommend tracing something round. You will also need to cut out a

triangle from paper (try to cut it out so it is about 2”- 2.5” tall).

Step 2

You will now trace the triangle 3 times. The shapes must touch in the center but should not overlap, and the

triangles should be placed in order to divide this triangle into thirds (if this were a clock, the triangles would be

align with the 12, the 4, and the 8). After you have drawn the 3 triangles, label each triangle with the primary

colors- Red (R), Yellow (Y), and Blue (B) .

Step 3

You will now trace the triangle 3 times. Pull the triangle back from the center so that they do not touch the

shapes that you have already traced. The next set of triangles should divide the space between the primary

color triangles in half. After you draw these three shapes, label this set of triangles with the secondary colors:

Purple (P), Green (G), and Orange (O). In the picture below, I gave information on what primary colors are

mixed to get each secondary color (such as R+B=P, Y+B=G, R+Y=O). I highly recommend that you do this as

well to help you learn color blending.

Step 4

You will now trace the triangle 6 times. Pull the triangle back from the other shapes so that they do not touch

them. You may lose some of the triangle at the edge of the circle, and that is o.k.. The next set of triangles

should divide the space between the primary color triangles and the secondary color triangles in half. After you

trace the 6 triangles, you will label them with the intermediary (also called tertiary) colors: Red-Purple (RP),

Blue-Purple (BP), Blue-Green (BG), Yellow-Green (YG), Yellow-Orange (YO) and Red-Orange (RO). In the

picture below, I gave information on what primary and secondary colors are mixed to get each intermediary (aka

tertiary) color (such as R+P=RP, B+P= BP, B+G=BG, Y+G=YG, Y+O= YO, and R+O=RO),. Again, I highly

recommend that you do this as well to help you learn color blending.

Step 5

It is now time to start filling in your color wheel. To do this, you will need some old magazines, newspapers, or

some other color printed materials (like mail order catalogues, pamphlets, wallpaper books, fabric samples,

ribbon, etc). Using your materials, complete the color wheel by finding all 12 colors you have labeled in your

materials. Get as close as you can to matching the colors, but if you are a little off, that is o.k.. Keep text to a

minimum- the color should dominate the triangular space. For example, on my yellow triangle, there is some

small black text, but it does not dominate the yellow triangle

Step 6

Submit a picture of you holding your color wheel as a response to the assignment. Make sure I can see all

of the colors on the color wheel so I can grade your work  Contact me with any questions about this

assignment ASAP!
