Overview
This activity sets the stage for the Week 4 assignment. Based on the media, Benefits of a Learning Organization, you will complete a brief needs assessment for a company. This activity emphasizes the characteristics and benefits of a learning organization, reminds you of the critical role of needs assessment in planning training, and demonstrates the use of research results in prioritizing learning goals as a business strategy.
Prepare
Complete the media activity, Benefits of a Learning OrganizationLinks
to an external site., which focuses on the benefits of cultivating a learning culture in a company. The media is based on a study from the American Journal of Management in which the authors find that remote employees in a telecommunications company with an Organizational Learning Culture are less likely to resign. Since hiring and training are expensive, and 35-40% of employees in the industry quit, improving the learning culture of an organization could be a good corporate strategy. The benefit is clear: retaining employees is cost-effective, given the high expenses associated with hiring and training when employees leave.
Instructions
Write 1-2 pages regarding the needs assessment for the company:
1. Explain at least 5 needs the company should prioritize in planning its organizational learning. Be sure to include at least 1 need at each of the levels of needs analysis: organizational, person (employee), and task. Be sure to read the interviews with employees and managers in the Benefits of a Learning OrganizationLinks
to an external site. media activity before you complete this task.
2. Analyze how each of the 5 needs you explain connects to the company’s strategy of building a learning organization. In your analysis, refer to the building blocks (and their subcomponents) of a learning organization: a supportive learning environment, concrete learning processes and practices, and leadership that reinforces learning. You do not have to address all of the building blocks or subcomponents, but do show how the needs are connected to increasing the company’s learning culture in ways specific to a building block and a subcomponent
