Please make sure that you submit a file format acceptable to Turnitin. I suggest a word doc or PDF. Note

also that students must complete this assignment using software that allows access to version history

(for example, google docs or onedrive). It is your responsibility to make sure that you understand and

that all CBU students have access to onedrive. The professor may ask to see version history of this

Assignment

In this essay you will use a mixture of reflexive and research skills. Over the course of the semester, we

have read several versions of several different fairy tales. In this essay reflect on how your

understanding of fairytales has changed over the course of the semester. Your reflective essay should

include a focused thesis (or perspective) which demonstrates how your understanding fairy tales has

evolved. Your essay must draw on specific textual examples from texts that we have engaged with this

semester. Quote from these texts and analyze how these examples have shifted your perspective.

Please make sure that at least one text referenced here is different than the text you write about for

your first essay.

This essay must also be supported by research. You must reference two peer-reviewed sources to help

support your reflections. Use this research to develop your reflections on your chosen texts and the

ideologies that these texts present. Please follow the MLA formatting and referencing style.

Other Considerations

• You may not have space to discuss all of the ways your views have shifted – remember to

narrow your focus to allow for more in-depth discussion of your points! Be sure to narrow your

topic and develop a focused thesis statement. Be certain that your thesis does more than assert

a commonsense moral. Remember that your thesis has to be something you must argue for – it

shouldn’t be a simple statement of fact, or something that is self-evident.

• You may refence a few tales from throughout the semester but be sure to stay focused – choose

a few examples to develop fully, rather than referencing every tale we have read!

• Reflection essays should make use of the first-person perspective.

• Strong reflective writing will still make use of textual evidence and analysis: use textual

examples to support your reflections. Make sure to discuss in detail how and why these

examples have helped to change your perspective.

• Do not provide a detailed summary of your texts but be sure to reference them accurately and

fully. Concentrate instead on developing our analysis and proving your thesis. Avoid long

quotations or summaries, providing only necessary context. Focus your quotations to draw my

attention to specific details, rather than reprinting large passages. Summarize only when

necessary to contextualize your evidence.

• Use a minimum of two peer reviewed sources. These should support your paper, but

remember that you must still develop your own perspective or argument. Avoid simply

repeating what others have said. Research should supplement and develop your argument, not

supplant it. Use research to fill in gaps, support your perspective, and push your ideas further.

• If you choose to consider historical context in your comparison, double check and document the

historical details you incorporate in your argument. Do not, for example, assert that ‘men in

World War Two were braver’ or “rape was acceptable in the 17th century” unless you have a

reliable source to back up your statement.

• Keep track of and show off your research. If you can’t provide a citation (because you’ve lost a

source) you will have to cut the un-cited material. Similarly, be sure to demonstrate the

research that you’ve done, even if it’s only in a footnote. When you do research of any kind,

you must acknowledge that research in your essay and cite it properly following the guidelines

discussed in class. Uncited research and unattributed direct quotations (three or more words

directly from a given source) are grounds for accusations of plagiarism.

• Stick to your wordcount.

Marking

Assignments will be marked with careful attention to writing clarity, effectiveness of the argument, and

effective inclusion of relevant evidence. When marking, I consider content and writing, but you should

attend particularly to the following in this paper. Use these questions to check your work before

handing it in.

• Technical aspects of writing. Is the paper structurally and grammatically sound? Does the

paper have a strong working thesis which addresses the significance of the analysis (i.e., the “so

what” factor)? Does the writer attend to sentence structure, the proper use of apostrophes,

and appropriate word choice? Does the writer avoid unnecessary second person address,

rhetorical questions, and contractions? Do the ideas flow logically from one to another?

• Reflection. Does the writer meaningfully reflect on their experience with the texts and lectures?

Do they pull specific examples to reflect on? Have they demonstrated how these examples

connect to their own reflections?

• Attention to assignment details. Is the paper within 100 words of the word count? Is the paper

properly formatted and documented? Has the writer used parenthetical citation and indicated

titles correctly? Does the paper have page numbers?

• Analysis. Has the writer fully read and understood their chosen texts? Does the writer avoid

over-reading? Does the writer highlight and explore supportive examples or textual evidence?

Are these examples sufficient and effective? Have points been fully developed? Has the writer

read and understood the secondary material they have included? Have they chosen secondary

material that is relevant and supports their paper?
