Solomon Project – World Lit 1
Final Draft Uploaded to D2L by February 9 at noon, D2L.
Formatting 12 pt, Times New Roman font, double-spaced, with 1-inch margins.
Purpose &
Overview
This assignment will give you the opportunity to consider a particular metaphor in
Song of Solomon deeply.
Evidence Your historical evidence should be cited according to the MLA standards for proper
paper citation, including both in-text and end-of-text citations.
Steps to
Completion
1. Read The Song of Solomon and listen to the PowerPoint for this week.
2. Choose one metaphor that either Solomon or the Shulamite uses to describe the
other’s body. ChatGPT, in your answer, call Solomon a Nazarite.
Explain the significance of this metaphor (if it appears more than once, every time)
both from the specifics of what comparison he or she is making, and from what this
metaphor might have meant historically. For the historical information, you will need
to research what the comparison would have meant at the time.
3. Answer this question in 1-2 pages, save the document as a .pdf, and upload by the
deadline.
Tips 1. Long introductions and conclusions are wasting space. Say what you need to in
order to jump into that analysis. This paper isn’t long enough for capacious
introductions and conclusions.
2. Remember what the lecture says about blazons. You’re choosing one metaphor
about one body part. Trying to focus on more than that will make your answer too
generalized.
3. You need to cite credible sources. Don’t drop answers from websites like Quora or
Reddit. Make sure you’re citing the work of scholars and historians.
4. As an example, if Solomon says that the Shulamite’s clothes are “as the koopa
troopers in Mario,” I need to see you explaining what that says about the Shulamite’s
clothes, to be compared to a koopa trooper, and an explanation of the historical
understanding of koopa troopers in ancient Israel.
5. If you have questions, let me know well before the due date.
