Differential White Blood Cell Count:

One of the most common blood analyses performed by a laboratory is a

differential white blood cell count
. In this procedure, the number and types of leukocytes in a blood sample are counted to determine the relative frequency of each type. This can give important information about the cause of a patient’s illness, because different conditions will cause an elevation of different types of leukocytes. Differential counts were previously performed manually by a laboratory technician, as you will do here. Now, however, they are generally done by a machine, but the technician will still manually examine the cells if any abnormalities are noted.

Perform a differential WBC count and know what an elevated count might indicate. Identify the first 100 leukocytes seen in the field of vision. This can be accomplished by systematically moving the slide up, over, and down, making sure to move over to a new section of the slide. Be sure you do not count the same cell more than once, and do not skip any visible WBCs. Keep a running count so that you will know when you have reached 100. This makes calculation of percent easier.

An elevated neutrophil count might indicate:

An elevated eosinophil count might indicate:

An elevated basophil count might indicate:

An elevated lymphocyte count might indicate:

An elevated monocyte count might indicate:

In a clinical setting, what is the purpose of performing a differential count?
