I need assistance with a discussion question
Sometimes a family in crisis needs a more direct interaction from a helping professional. This is the role of the Strategic Therapist. The strategic therapist is somewhat of a “Drill Seargent” in the counseling environment. They do complete an initial assessment of the presenting problem and current family unit. They then turn to more of a focused problem-solving approach to address specific challenges within the family unit. Common therapeutic techniques include assignments, paradoxical suggestion, various levels of empathic responses/interpretations, and more.
What are your thoughts on this theory and practice?
Have you ever heard someone say, “You act just like your ________ (mother, father, grandparent, etc)?”
Is there anything to this?
Do we inherit behavioral tendencies from our family? This is part of the orientation base of transgenerational theory. There does seem to be some evidence that certain behaviors are passed from generation to generation.
Is this because of biology or behavioral modeling? Explore some of this this week in your research. Transgenerational Thoery includes multiple generations from one or both sides of a family unit to address behavioral challenges in a family unit. It considers decades of family interaction, culture, and evolution in attempting to solve challenges within the family unit. Bowenian family theory also looks at birth order / sibling position as a major factor in personality development.
