Scenario 1
Atlanta has experienced a series of incidents of scandalous police shootings of unarmed individuals and accusations of racial profiling in both police use of physical force and traffic stops. This has led to widespread protests around the city and calls from citizens, community leaders and local politicians for police reforms to address these issues and repair police community relations.In your writing assignment, outline the steps your department would take to reduce illegitimate usage of physical force and racial profiling, and the proactive efforts you would take to help repair police-community relations and enhance police legitimacy. These reforms can include changes in hiring practices, introducing new trainings, changing police tactics, improving supervision of police officers, enhancing police accountability and punishment of wrong doing and so forth.
Steps To Complete This Assignment
- Read the final assignment information on 4.8 Exam 3 & Final Project
- Review both police chief scenarios and choose one. Write an assignment in response to the scenario you choose. This assignment will follow the general structure for a short academic essay/term paper.
- Begin your assignment with a brief introduction that describes the scenario you chose and tells the reader the that following sections will make evidence-based recommendations for each component of the scenarios you are asked to address above.
- In the body paragraphs of your assignment, discuss each of the issues you are addressing, outline your response to each, and argue why it is likely to succeed based on research evidence. This should be by far the longest section of your paper (3-4 pages of the 5-page minimum)
- Summarize your recommendationsin a brief conclusion. Explain why you, as chief of police, feel they are the best way to effectively address your chosen issues.
How Will I Evaluate Your Assignment?
To succeed with this assignment, make sure that you follow these format and length requirements:
- Required Length: The assignment must be at least FIVE typed, double-spaced pages in 12-point Times New Roman font with 1-inch margins. The paper must be a minimum of 5 FULL pages, not counting a title page or the references page at the end. You will turn in your paper via upload to the final course assignment folder on the course iCollege page.
- Required Sources: Your assignment must include a MINIMUM of three scholarly sources outside of the course materials on iCollege. Note that many answers will need to draw from more than three sources as likely more than three recommendations will be made in more complex recommended solutions. By scholarly source I mean a research journal article or scholarly book, not Wikipedia or other websites, newspapers, magazines and so forth.
- Proper Citations: Use APA format where applicable, if you draw from any sources outside of course material. See citation formatting examples (in APA style) at the end of this assignment sheet. When drawing from course materials on the iCollege page you may just more casually refer to them. For example, “As discussed in the course materials in module 3.2….”
