Universal Basic Income
Wake up! It’s your 20th birthday and your parents have decided it’s time you took on some responsibility. All your financial burdens come raining down on you at once. You have no clue how you will pay for your stay at college, afford to eat, and juggle school all at the same time. According to an article from a CQ Researcher called “Universal Basic Income,” a student Cassandra experienced a great deal of financial freedom due to the SEED Program. Where She was given 1,000 monthly so she was able to focus on school without the worry of how she would pay for her life expenses and enjoy being a young adult (Collier). What I find amazing about Cassandra’s story is she is a young mom going off to college and can enjoy it without struggling to pay bills or work a job. Most people often work and go to college, usually having to drop out and take care of their families. Fortunately, we have citizens working to help more young adults receive help, which is called Universal Basic Income. Universal Basic Income in America results from income disparity, but a solution such as monthly income may offer relief.
First, at its core Universal Basic Income is a form of social security or unemployment in which young adults receive monthly income at a set amount, intended to improve equality, protection, and support for citizens of the U.S. According to an article from CQ Researcher “Universal Basic Income”, “
Yang argued that a UBI is needed to address income disparity, stagnant wages and job losses from automation” (collier). With Universal basic income, all citizens of the U.S. receive 1,000 a month as a guaranteed income. It provides citizens with protection against sudden job losses and support for stagnant wages, and every citizen is given the same amount of diverse equality.
Secondly, Universal basic income has grown since the pandemic in 2020. During covid-19 families struggled so badly because of job losses or cut hours that executives stepped up to create programs to ensure families don’t fall below due to unpredictable circumstances. The pandemic really highlighted how American families weren’t financially stable they were one paycheck away from being in financial ruin (Chavez). Without the impact of the pandemic families would be still unnoticeably financially unstable.
Finally, Universal basic income’s primary purpose is to reduce poverty by providing a safety net for all citizens. Giving money to those in need with no strings attached. The idea has been pitched since 2020 and even proven after the pandemic, that it can help American families in big ways. Since then, many places have pushed it to become permanent and a safety net for citizens (Could Universal Basic Income Help End Poverty). With a little help from the government, they can solve economic poverty by giving them little income with no strings attached. Ensuring all families have incomes and don’t fall below.
Universal basic income represents the approach to addressing economic inequality and insecurity. By providing citizens with guaranteed income, it aims to promote financial stability.
