Residency Program – Cost or Benefit
1) Please provide a comprehensive explanation of how Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs benefit their sponsoring institutions. In your response, elaborate on the direct, indirect, and “intangible” benefits, detailing their impact not only on the sponsoring institution itself but also on the residents, the local community, university sponsors and affiliates, and the broader community and nation.
2) Does it cost sponsoring institutions more to train residents rather than replacing them with full-time physicians? Justify your argument by discussing the costs and benefits associated with both scenarios, including factors that influence these financial impacts.
3) Does eliminating residents in sponsoring institutions increase the cost of care? Provide a detailed justification for your position, referencing specific financial analyses, replacement costs, and other factors that contribute to the overall financial impact.
4) The practice protocols and treatment methods that residents receive in their training become imprinted on them during the training period.
Fully describe the lasting impact of these training practice/treatment protocols and associated costs on physicians’ practice patterns after they complete residency and discuss any observed effects on quality of care.
