Gendered Life Interview Transcript: Arrange for an in-person discussion of 30-60 minutes with the person you identified in your Gendered Life Interview plan. Ask your person to tell you about they have experienced gender. You can focus on a particular episode in their life, or the broad contours of their life over time. You can zoom in on one area of their life (such as family of origin, career, religion, spousal 5 relations, friendship, etc.) or you can cover lots of different areas. You can share your questions in advance or not, as you choose. This probably goes without saying, but you are expected to not ask your person about anything they don’t wish to talk about, and you should not do anything during your interview that would cause that person distress. You are also expected to obtain your person’s consent for the interview in advance (in other words, please don’t just show up and start questioning them when they don’t expect it). You should also obtain their consent to record the interview (your phone’s voice memo function is probably the easiest way to record). The interview transcript is the word-for-word report of your interviews. You can type out the transcript from listening to it, or if you have a function that converts spoken words for text, you can use that or if you have access to an AI platform like Otter which converts speech to text, you can use that – just be sure that you read it over and proofread everything before you submit it. You will submit your transcript through the Gendered Life Interview Transcript portal in the Assignments section of Canvas any time before the end of Week 9 (to be precise, before 23h59 on the Friday of Week 9). If you submit an interview and then you decide to withdraw your first transcript and re-do it, you can do so, as long as the resubmission is in the portal by the deadline. We will mark whatever has been submitted as of the end of Week 9. We will not mark transcripts submitted after 23h59 on the Friday of Week 9. Please use this format: 1. Do not use your person’s real name – create a pseudonym. 2. At the top of your transcript, describe how you got their consent to the interview. 3. Include the whole interview, what you said and what your person said – please do not edit or add commentary (that’s the next assignment!). 4. Number your pages and make sure that your name and student number is on each page. 5. For an example of a transcript, try here. Here is how your transcript will be marked: 5 marks for an interview of sufficient length and detail, submitted on time. 5 marks for the quality and skill of your questions. We may ask you to provide the audio file of your interview to confirm its existence.
