“I am from” Poem Assignment Sheet
Introduction
For your first major assignment, you will reflect on your childhood, your roots, and write an “I
am from” poem in the style of George Ella Lyon.
Competency Areas
In writing your “I am from” Poem, you will demonstrate progress in the following ENGL 1010
competency areas:
1. Analysis of Writing
2. Applied Grammar and Writing Skills
3. Editing and Proofreading Skills
Classwork
In order to assist you in composing your “I am from” Poem, we will spend time in class
working on brainstorming; sensory detail; poetry format and drafting; revision and editing; and
self, peer, and sample evaluation with the grade rubric.
Specifics
Genre: Poem
Length: 4 stanzas of 4 or 5 lines each, for a total of 18-20 lines.

Submission: “I am from” Poem dropbox in Blackboard. Dropbox will be open one week before
deadline. See the “I am from” Poem dropbox in Blackboard for submission
instructions. If you are unfamiliar with dropbox submission, submit early enough to
contact me with any questions.
Late work: Work will not be accepted late.
Provisions for Instructional Time missed because of documented absences due to
jury duty, military duty, required job training, or extreme illness will be made at the

“I am from” Poems will be graded according to the “I am from” Poem Grade Rubric published
on Blackboard. See rubric for grade criteria and point values. Rubrics, feedback, and grades
will be released in Blackboard.
