Hello!

I am currently taking an online English Composition II class. I have the following assignment due.

Outline is due Saturday, 10-04-25

The rough draft is due by 10-06-25

Final draft due by 10-08-25

From my professor:

This is the location where you will submit the outline for your Social Media Analysis.

Please review the Outline Basics file in Module 1 before completing this assignment.

Social Media Analysis Paper

Social Media Analysis

Minimum Length Amount:  4 double spaced pages + a Works Cited page

Step 1: Read the assigned articles about social media.

Step 2: Write a paper that critically examines your social media usage.

Consider answering the following questions to write this paper:

  1. How much time do you spend on social media? What sites do you visit?
  2. What are your feelings regarding social media?
  3. What sites do you enjoy? Avoid?
  4. How do you access information?
  5. What were your first experiences on social media?
  6. How have your social media behaviors evolved?
  7. What topics interest you on social media?
  8. Who or what organizations do you follow? Why?
  9. What are some healthy behaviors you practice regarding your social media usage? What are some behaviors that you need to improve regarding your social media usage?
  10. How does your online persona change compare to your public or private personas?
  11. How has your social media usage affected your writing? Critical thinking?
  12. How does your social media usage influence your daily actions?
  13. How do you define concepts like friends, communication, or relationships in your social media usage?
  14. Write about memorable encounters online.
  15. Based upon your experience as a social media participant, what advice would you give to someone younger, or a younger version of yourself?
  16. Describe your style as a social media participant. Are you more of a content creator or content consumer?
  17. How does your social media usage affect your interpersonal communication with others? How do you interact with other people on social media?
  18. How do you engage with social issues through your social media usage?
  19. Does using social media cause a feeling of empowerment, discouragement, or ________?
  20. How does your social media usage affect your access to information?

I recommend answering several of these questions to write this paper.

NOTE: You are not writing a research paper about social media. Your only task is to examine your own experiences with using social media throughout your life.

From my Professor:

Outline Basics

Outlines are useful resources for the following reasons:

  1. Aids in the process of writing
  2. Helps you organize your ideas
  3. Presents your material in a logical form
  4. Shows the relationships among ideas in your writing
  5. Constructs an ordered overview of your writing
  6. Defines boundaries and groups

Brainstorm: List all the ideas that you want to include in your paper.

  • Organize: Group related ideas together.
  • Order: Arrange material in subsections from general to specific or from abstract to concrete.
  • Label: Create main and sub headings.

Remember: creating an outline before writing your paper will make organizing your thoughts a lot easier. Whether you follow the suggested guidelines is up to you, but making any kind of outline (even just some jotting down some main ideas) will be beneficial to your writing process.

Ideally, you should follow these five suggestions to create an effective outline.

Before crafting your outline ask yourself the following questions:

  • What is the purpose of my essay?
  • Who is my intended audience?
  • What is my essay’s thesis statement, (NOTE: The thesis statement must be present in the introductory paragraph and the body paragraphs must commit to what the thesis states).

Parallelism – How do I accomplish this?

Each heading and subheading should preserve parallel structure. If the first heading is a verb, the second heading should be a verb. Example:

  1. Choose Desired Colleges
  2. Prepare Application

(“Choose” and “Prepare” are both verbs. The present tense of the verb is usually the preferred form for an outline)

Coordination – How do I accomplish this?

All the information contained in Heading 1 should have the same significance as the information contained in Heading 2. The same goes for the subheadings (which should be less significant than the headings). Example:

  1. Visit and evaluate college campuses
  2. Visit and evaluate college websites
    1. Note important statistics
    2. Look for interesting classes

(Campus and websites visits are equally significant. They are part of the main tasks you would need to do. Finding statistics and classes found on college websites are parts of the process involved in carrying out the main heading topics.)

Subordination – How do I accomplish this?

The information in the headings should be more general, while the information in the subheadings should be more specific. Example:

  1. Describe an influential person in your life
    1. Favorite high school teacher
    2. Grandparent

(A favorite teacher and grandparent are specific examples from the generalized category of influential people in your life.)

Division – How do I accomplish this?

Each heading should be divided into 2 or more parts. Example:

I. Compile resume

A. List relevant courseworkB. List work experienceC. List volunteer experience

(The heading “Compile resume” is divided into 3 parts.)

Technically, there is no limit to the number of subdivisions for your headings; however, if you seem to have a lot, it may be useful to see if some of the parts can be combined.

Development: How do I accomplish this?

For each subdivision you want to include as many details as possible. Be specific as you develop the content that will appear in your drafts.

II. Visit and evaluate college websites

A. Note important statistics

1. School enrollment2. Class size3. Class availability

a. Day classesb. Night classesc. Online classes

4. Scholarship opportunities5. Faculty profiles

a. Faculty interests/specialtiesb. Student to faculty ratio

B. Look for interesting classes

1. General education requirements

2. List of majors

a. Do all campuses offer the same programs?b. Can you find a major that fits your planned course of study?

3. Unique class availability

a. Electivesb. Core classes in a major required to graduatec. Flexibility to replace classes

C. Navigate the class website

1. List essential information

a. Map of campusb. Faculty contact informationc. Login to student portalsd. Parking areas

2. Note additional opportunities

a. List of athletic teams

I.  Intramural teams/sports

b. Greek lifec. Additional clubsd. Cultural groups e.

e. Religious groups

At this point do not focus on writing sentences.  During the outline process, you need to jot down and insert specific tidbits of details.  You will then take these details and develop them into sentences during the drafting process.  In other words, I do not want to see complete sentences throughout your outlines.

From my professor:
