Hello, please read the instructions carefully and write a paper accordingly. Choose and write on a topic about the relationship between North and South Korea.

1. Introduction (~2 pages):

  1. This section provides an overview of the topic. All papers must have a question that you are attempting to answer.  The question draws from our seminar topic and experiences. This must be stated at the start of the paper.

In the introduction, you then explain why and how this question is significant in the global context. This is an academic paper, and existing research should be used to establish and support this topic. The topic doesn’t have to be specific to South Korea, but our seminar in South Korea should provide a platform for you to find a question.

  1. Please remember to always cite your source. This is an academic paper, not a reflection. In other words, I shouldn’t be asking, “How do you know this information?” Support all claims, points arguments through citing relevant academic literature.
  2. You should be using existing literature to explain/establish your points, rather than writing in the “I”/first person. Consider this as justification to establish the significance of the topic using existing research and not simply about our personal perspective and position.

In this section, at least eight (8) different article citations are expected.  You can draw from the class reading and the additional reading. These articles may be repeated (and in fact they should be in other sections of the paper).

2. Body (~7 pages):

  1. This section of your paper begins with a paragraph that explains how you have organized three themes to address your question. This paragraph will also explain why these three themes are specifically relevant to answering your question.

Before you begin this section, be sure that you have sorted your articles into different themes based on the articles’ findings (sometimes called results). After you sort your articles (including those you read for the seminar), giving your themes a descriptive name is important. The names of the sorted articles will become your headings for each of the paragraphs that you write in the body of your review. In other words, this is not a review of each article but a synthesis of all the articles to establish and support your theme. In other words, you are taking multiple articles, building on the theme, and not reviewing one article at a time.

To write the body of your paper, it is important to include the following:

  1. Each theme should start with a paragraph that describes the theme. In other words, why is this a significant theme in answering your question? Once you have established this, you need to expand and explain the theme in relation to the question.
  2. Each theme should include a heading ( to an external site.).
  3. Please do not provide a summary of each article nor an evaluation of each article you found.
  4. Rather, you should combine existing literature to paint a cohesive and in-depth picture of the themes you identified.
  5. As you read widely but selectively in your topic area, consider what themes or issues connect your sources together. All literature need not agree, as issues may be contentious and/or have findings that are different. But you bring them together cohesively around the specific theme.

In this section, at least ten (10) different article citations are expected.  You can draw from the class reading and the additional reading. These articles may be repeated (and in fact they should be in other sections of the paper).

3. Summary (~ 1 page): Discuss and summarize the main findings you reviewed, and establish how you answered the question you first asked. Try to conclude your paper by connecting your inquiry question back to the topic of study.

Things to keep in mind:

  • Rather than providing a direct quotation from an individual source, you need to organize multiple sources into conversations. Thus, paraphrasing is an essential part of literature review ( to an external site.).
  • This assignment is a chance for you to demonstrate your knowledge on a topic, and putting ideas into your own words (i.e., paraphrasing) will ensure that you are interpreting the found material for your reader. Paraphrasing will also ensure your review of literature is in your authorial voice (again, please refer back to the articles we have read in class).
  • To avoid plagiarism, please ensure you don’t simply copy-paste other people’s ideas and words  to an external site.
  • A literature review can be lengthy and dense, so you will want to make your text appealing to your reader. Transitions allow you to demonstrate where authors agree or disagree on a topic and highlight your interpretation of the literature.

4. References and Formatting

  1. Paper must be typed, double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman, 1-inch margins.
  2. Use APA 7th edition (APA Style Introduction // Purdue Writing LabLinks to an external site.) or Chicago Style (Chicago Manual of Style 17th Edition // Purdue Writing LabLinks to an external site.)
  3. Please include at least 10 different references.
    1. Each academic reference may be used multiple times in the paper, but should include at least 10 different academic references.
    2. Academic references should be timely and current, so avoid older studies, unless they are theoretical and/or seminal pieces for the topic.
    3. An excellent paper will support claims through research and avoid assumptions. An excellent paper will also avoid generalized and vague writing and will focus on depth in explanation.
