Answer five of the following questions.  You choose which five out of the seven to answer.

Length, citations, attachments: Each answer should be 2 substantial paragraphs in length.  Aim for 250-300 words per answer.  Each answer should contain information with citations with page numbers from the textbook throughout the answer, for example (Cherny, page 110).  Please do not use any additional sources.

1. From chapter 7:  During California’s progressive era, the state legislature established new patterns for state politics and governmental administration. What were some of the most important policies fostered by progressives, what were their underlying goals, and how do they continue to influence Golden State politics today?

 

2.  From chapter 7:  Domestic and world events contributed to the increasing diversity of California’s burgeoning population and economic growth. Who came and why? Where did the newcomers settle, and what did they do? How did they contribute to California’s economic well-being and culturally diverse heritage?

 

3. From chapter 7:  The California economy diversified and many new industries emerged to make the state a leader in agriculture and in manufacturing. What were the main sectors of growth, and what forces account for the state’s phenomenal growth? How did these changes contribute to enhancing California’s role in the broader world economy?

 

4. From chapter 8:  Discuss the growth of Los Angeles in the 1920s and 1930s, explaining how the city became a model for urban development in the entire nation.

 

5. From chapter 8:  During the 1920s and 1930s, the arts and architecture played important roles in California’s culture and influenced the country as a whole. Give examples of this development from music, literature, film, and architectural styles. Discuss how they reflected or responded to the different needs and interests of Californians.

 

6.  From chapter 8:  During the Great Depression, California politicians offered a variety of ways to deal with unemployment, unionization, and social welfare needs. Give examples of progressive Republican, moderate to conservative Republican, Democratic, and radical proposals or policies. Which seemed to be most popular with Californians, based on their voting patterns?
