Developmental Context

I would like to focus on late high school students, mostly late adolescense aged 17-19. I would
like to focus on those struggling with a lower socioeconomic status, as they are often less likely
to receive, or even know about, some of the financial support and overall assistance available
when considering college. The developmental context I would like to improve is self-regulation.
The specific context I would like to adjust is the high school. I plan to play the role of counselor.

Problems

Lack of mentorship/guidance

Mental health issues from subsequent struggling

Lack of resources and services

Solutions

For lack of mentorship, one solution would be for all highschool students to get in contact with a
counselor their junior year to discuss college and options best suited for them.

For mental health issues, a solution could be to provide accesibly counselors and therapy for
student

For lack of resources, students could be given handouts with all information on local resources,
websites, scholarships, tutoring, grants, etc. All the information that is helpful when considering
college, especially if one faces additional adversity.

Class Concepts

One concept that is important in these contexts is scaffolding, as extra guidance and support
during challenging times can help students.

Additionally, goodness of fit is an applicable concept for a student navigating where they want to
go and how supportive their current environment is.

Lastly, emerging adulthood is a concept as students are reaching the age of 18 when they go to
college. This can be a challenging time for individuals to adapt to both emerging adulthood and
college, or life outside of high school in general.

Developmental Context

The target population whose development I would like to foster is emerging adulthood
(age 18-26) specifically from an immigrant household. I want to focus on finding identity
when it comes to culture heritage and American culture as well as religion. This matters
because many with a cultural background struggle on how to maintain their cultural
heritage/ religion while living in America. I want the role as an advisor.

Problem

The first problem that is already present is emerging adults having to choose their
identity in school/work that causes an isolation from others

The second problem that is already present is stress between two worlds of cultural
heritage and American culture

The third problem that is already present is discrimination from the culture/religion they
were born into to a culture that they had to pick up

Solutions

One idea for the first problem is going to the cultural rooms for example the Pan African
Common (PAC), Middle East, North Africa, South Asia (MENASA), etc to find their
community

One idea for the second problem is going to an advisor, therapist, or counselor to
relieve the stress on trying to find your identity and understanding that your you should
not be ashamed to hide your culture/religion

one idea for the third problem is finding or making a support group that deals with or
dealt with discrimination

Class concept

A class concept that can inform this context is finding identity in ones self when finding
themselves when it comes to religion and culture. They do not have to change to fit in,
but finding the right group.

Another concept that can inform this concept is ecological systems because it
developed by many groups such as family, school, environment, etc

Last concept that can inform this concept is sociocultural theory where social and
cultural interactions can help ones find their identity and feel belonging in the
environment

Developmental Context

The target population whose development I would like to foster is adolescence, ages
15-18. Particularly, those who are latino. The aspect of development I want to focus on
is work-family balance. The developmental context that I want to improve is high
school/home. The role I would like to play is teacher.

Problems

The first problem that is already present in this context is students who are latino are
more likely to experience poverty and don’t have enough access to resources.

The second problem that is already present in this context is family responsibilities

The third problem that is present in this context is motivation and pressure

Solutions

One idea to improve the first problem is free tutoring or programs that are available
during school hours, sometimes students dont have time after school so provide a
period where you can get support from teachers.

One idea to improve the second problem is to communicate and talk to families and
make a plan on how to support the family together, provide info sessions or community
sessions to teach parents about what responsibilities are appropriate for their children.

One idea to improve the third problem is to have a support group or counselor at school
that can help and understand the teens problems/ideas. Talking to parents about mental
health and ways they can support or encourage their child instead of putting pressure
on them.

Class Concepts

A class concept that can inform this context and help generate solutions is identity
formation because it provides a search of who adolescents really are and how they form
relationships with their parents, peers and school.

Another class concept that can inform this context and help generate solutions is
decision making, this gives adolescents a chance to make their own decisions which is
really important rather than controlling them or telling them what to do. It creates more
communication at home and school.

The last class concept that can inform this context and help generate solutions is social
development because it helps those who need access to resources, education and
community ties.
