Speaking Assignment: You will present a 5 to 7 minute speech to persuade your audience on a topic of some importance to you and to them. Your goal is to influence how members of your class think, feel, or act regarding your topic. • Include the main parts of a speech along with their required elements: o Introduction (attention getter, credibility statement, topic revealing statement, preview statement) o Body (main points), and o Conclusion (recap/summary of main points and closing statement) • Use transitions to assist your audience in following the development of your speech (First, Second, Third, In Conclusion)
Topic: Choose a topic that is in the public forum, not something that is going on in your personal life/is known only by you. Organization: • For Fact or Value speeches, you’ll most likely use the topical pattern. • For Policy (Action) speeches, you’ll most likely use either problem/solution, problem/cause/solution, or Monroe’s Motivated Sequence (*if you use this one, label your outline with the steps: Attention, Need, Satisfaction, Visualization, Action*) Full-Sentence Outline: Use Roman Numerals for Intro, Body, and Conclusion; use Capital Letters for the main points, and Arabic numbers (1, 2, etc.) for the subpoints.
Practice, Practice, Practice with Keyword Notecards! Reading your speech will negatively affect your grade. Research: A minimum of 3 research sources must be verbally cited during the course of your speech. These are in addition to your own knowledge and experience on the subject. These sources may be publications, electronic media, or interview sources. Use a variety of support: quotes, statistics, examples.
