Immersion Assignment

Students will have the opportunity to engage with members of a diverse group that differs from some aspect of their identity (race, class, gender, religion, sexual orientation, etc.). Students will do this  through participation in an interview with someone from a different culture or identity than themselves. After the interview, students will write and and submit a 3-4 page, typewritten reflection paper written in APA formatting. The 3-4 page written paper must address the following questions:

1.     What diverse group did your interviewee belong too?

2.     How is this diverse group different from your own diverse background?

3.     Why did you chose them for this assignment?

4.     What were some of your biases/prejudices does this group often experience?

5.     How, if at all, had your personal biases/prejudices change after your participation in this assignment and why?

6.     How did you feel when you first started the interview? How, if at all, did that feeling change by the time you left?

7.     What did you learn from this experience?

How can this experience help you in your social work practice?

The paper must adhere to APA formatting. While no additional readings are required for this assignment, which is largely introspective in nature, any reference to the textbook or other readings must be properly cited using the most recent version of APA. Papers must respond to all of the questions listed above, but must be written in a narrative format rather than numbered responses.
