Scenario

After recently graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), you were promoted to Clinical Educator for your unit. The Nurse Manager asked for your help completing an innovative practice analysis to assist the organization with determining future needs for technology to lead innovation and future service for the local community. The title for this renewed drive for innovation in practice excellence is “The Time for the Future is Now.”

Organizational characteristics:

· 92-bed full-service, not-for-profit regional hospital

· 600 employees, 120 of which are active and consulting physicians

· The mission is simple: Improve the health, lives, and well-being of the people in the community we serve.

· Philosophy: We service a rural community as if we were in a suburban setting.

Unique services currently offered include:

· A team approach to Cancer Care with an on-site multidisciplinary rounding clinical served by virtual assistants.

· On-site Adult Care with a focus on Adult Day Care and Overnight Respite (currently the largest cost center).

· Genetics Counseling featuring a personalized approach to drug therapies provided via virtual visits by doctors, masters-prepared nurse genetic counselors, and 24-hour access to the side-effect and drug effectiveness monitoring with a password-protected laboratory portal.

· Virtual Primary Care is offered from 7am-11pm with a fee of $25.00 per visit for routine health services.

Community Demographics:

· Rural setting, the current population is approximately 30,000, with 97% Caucasian, 2% African American, and 1% Hispanic

· 60.1% of residents are retired

· Average age = 64.2 years

· High prevalence of diabetes, heart disease, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

· 89% of residents own and live in their home, a single-family residence.

· Average yearly income is $34,000.

Instructions

Listed below are two types of innovative healthcare services under consideration for purchase and integration in this organization. Complete an analysis of the two types of innovation under consideration for purchase. The primary objective is to select the innovation to serve the needs of the local community best.

· Virtual Sitter Service (currently contract with local employee agency to provide sitter services)

· Tele-Wound Consulting Service (currently contract with local home health agency to provide nurses certified in wound care)

Write your analysis report of the two innovations in a Word document, including the following:

· Recommendation of innovation as the first or second selection for purchase with a detailed explanation of the rationale for choice, including:

· Analysis of the two innovations with rationale of your priority choice

· One resource from the literature supporting the choice  

· Identify at least two immediate impacts on the organization and at least two immediate impacts on the community served from your priority choice.
