Carefully review a standard of professional performance from the Scope and Standards of Practice book. This must come from Standard 7-18 which are the Standards of Professional Performance. Choose one standard and consider each of the competencies in that standard. Discuss specific ways in which you could meet the competencies in the standard of professional performance in your individual practice.

Social Justice issue
Select a current example of a population that is oppressed by life experiences or factors in the environment. Here are some populations from which to choose:

- teen boys trapped by poverty in violent gangs
- Children from abusive homes
- Elderly Alzheimer’s patients whose family financially exploits them
- Wounded warriors suffering from PTSD
Then answer the following questions as you think about nurses dealing with social justice issues.
- How can a nurse make sense of the travesty of oppression that causes so much human suffering?
- What moral obligation do nurses have to prevent human entrapment rather than just caring for victims of violence? How could nurses advocate for an end to oppressive conditions?
- When nurses observe an underserved population trapped by one of more of external factors, what should be done?
- How does the ANA Code of Ethics guide the nurse in mobilizing forces to address this social issue?
- If nurses ignore forces trapping the population they serve, what is the most likely set of outcomes in 5-8 years from now?
