Suggestions for Second Journal Entry
1. Culture is something that we often assume only other people have. In what ways are you aware of the cultural influences on your own behavior?
2. The United States is sometimes criticized for being as individualistic as it is. What are some positive aspects about growing up in an individualistic culture? In what ways would growing up in a collectivist culture be positive?
3. What does your culture highly value? Achievement? Equality? Respect? Authority? Honesty? Loyalty? How do you see your cultural values being transmitted and reinforced in your society?
4. In what ways has your self-concept changed over the course of your adolescent and adult life? What parts of your self-concept have remained relatively constant?
5. Can you think of a situation when you have been the recipient of inappropriate self-disclosures? Did this self-disclosure become a burden to you? How did you feel in that situation? In what ways were the self-disclosures inappropriate
6. Why do you suppose parents and teachers pay so much attention to the self-esteem of children? What’s especially good abut having high self-esteem?

Suggestions for Third Journal Entry
1. In what ways would you alter your personal appearance if you were trying to look friendlier? Smarter? More liberal? Wealthier? What aspects of personal appearance convey those messages?
2. Touch is a form of nonverbal communication that is highly affected by social and cultural rules. What are some of the rules of touch that you perceive? Are you comfortable with touch or do you consider yourself a touch avoider? Explain and give examples.
3. How mindful of you about the way you dress, wear your hair, or do your makeup? What messages are you intentionally sending? To what extent do the people in your group receive your message accurately?
4. Why do you suppose people tend to overestimate how good they are at listening? How good are you at active listening? How might you improve your listening skills?
5. What is the difference between interrupting and competitive interrupting? Why do people engage in competitive interrupting? Can you think of a time you engaged in competitive interrupting? What was the context of this situation and why did you choose this form of communication?

Country Nigeria
Research meditation in your
assigned country (see country list under “List of Countries and Student Assignments” in the “Module 2” folder) and answer the following questions based on the information found.
1. Is meditation a common practice in your assigned country?
a. If so, discuss how it affects peoples’ daily lives and interactions (i.e., is it tied to religion, self-care, work-based programs/incentives, etc.).
b. If not, find a similar practice found in that country (i.e., “quiet hours,” reflection, designated rest days, etc.). Describe this practice.
2. Refer to the textbook section on meditation starting on p. 219- what would you say the overall purpose or goal is for the type(s) of meditation you found in your country?
(Note: the textbook and e-book pages do not line up. While in the e-book, the actual page numbers will be indicated on the right hand on the screen within the text of the chapters)

OR select a classmate whose research on their assigned country was different from your research, and answer the following questions
