Key Analyses [KA] #1

Comparing Revolutions Across the Atlantic

Submission Information:

Due Date: Monday, February 9th, 2026 at 11:59pm EST.

Submission Guidelines:

*Note: I know that you have a lot of readings to
get through. I have allotted two weeks for each
of your KAs. Please utilize your time wisely; pace
yourself so that you are not overwhelmed. Read
a little each day; give yourself time to think
deeply about each of these events in the context
of all that we see today. Finally, write
passionately.

I am here if you need anything. Please visit my
Tuesday office hours if you need help.

– Assignment can be found in Canvas
under the “Week Two” Module.

– This is an assignment, not a discussion
post. There will be no need to reply to
another student. I will be the only one
reading them.

– Please find your readings to complete
this assignment in the “Week Two”
module, as well.

Readings:
1.) The Great Jamaica Revolt
2.) Causes of the American Revolution
3.) The Hidalgo-Morelos Rebellion.
4.) The French Revolution.
5.) The Haitian Revolution.
– This is a link. When you open the link, see the
“essays in this section” red box in the top left corner.
Read those and explore the site for more info.
6.) Denmark Vessey’s Rebellion.
– Found in the same PDF with Nat Turner’s
Rebellion

7.) Nat Turner’s Rebellion.

Point Values:
❑ Your Submission: 90 Points

– Organization, spelling, and complete
sentences will be factored into your
grade.

❑ In each section, I have outlined the
readings you will need to answer the
questions.

Directions:

Please note that each question must be answered in a minimum of 75 words; longer

questions need to be answered in paragraph formatting.

1.) Summarizing: Think hard, be bold, and put these in your own words.

→ Define: What is a revolution? What components must exist for a movement to be a

revolution?

→ Define: What is a rebellion? What components must exist for a movement to be a rebellion?

2.) For each of the revolutions and rebellions, summarize the following:

→ Who: Plotted the rebellion [who were the leaders]? Who or what was the rebellion against?

→ When and where did the revolutions/rebellions take place? List key places for each one;

avoid being vague.

→ What: Was this a rebellion or a revolution? What were the ways the rebellion was carried

out?

→ Why: did the rebellion/revolution take place? What were the goals?

3.) Analyzing:

→ American Revolution: Consider the things that made the American colonists angry about King

George. Now consider what you know about the government that was established after

gaining their independence. Answer: What was revolutionary about the American

Revolution? What things were not?

→ Denmark Vessey & Nat Turner’s Rebellions: Based on these readings, how would you define

the response to slavery from Black people who were enslaved?

→ For each of the remaining revolutions and rebellions: what were the effects of these events?

4.) Comparing: For each of the revolutions and rebellions, compare the following:

→ Choose one rebellion and one revolution: What are two key similarities between a

revolution and a rebellion? Use at least two examples from your readings.

→ What ideas about freedom did leaders of the Haitian Revolution and have in common?

→ What ideas about freedom did leaders of the French Revolution and the American

Revolution have in common?

5.) Contrast: For each of the revolutions and rebellions, contrast the following:

→ Consider their overall goals and methods: How did the Great Jamaica Revolt differ from Nat

Turner’s Rebellion?

→ Choose two events [different events from the two you’ve previously used]: Contrast the

ways that religion was utilized to formulate their overall goals and tactics.
