Purpose:

The purpose of this reflection is to help students recognize and understand the importance of safe medication administration practices and provide a heightened awareness of the outcomes when an error has occurred.

Course outcomes: This assignment enables the student to meet the following course outcomes:

CO2: Identify characteristics of professional behavior, including emotional intelligence, communication, and conflict resolution. (POs 3, 5, and 6)

CO3: Demonstrate information literacy and the ability to utilize resources. (POs 3, 5, and 8)

Preparing the assignment:

Follow these guidelines when completing this assignment. The paper should be 2-3 pages excluding the title page. Speak with your faculty member if you have questions.

2. As you watch the video, imagine you are Gwen Cox, RN, or consider someone you love deeply as that patient.

3. Think about how the medication error occurred, beginning in the med room, to the bedside, to the event that occurred after the medication was administered. Then think about the long-term consequences for both the nurse, Gwen, and her patient.
