The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)-prepared nurse serves as a crucial link between
research and clinical application. PhD-prepared nurses focus on generating new
information, but the DNP-prepared nurse is tasked with the responsibility of
synthesizing and translating existing data into the clinical setting to improve
outcomes and healthcare delivery (Garcia et al., 2024). This distinction is critical given
the increasingly sophisticated healthcare setting. The American Association of
Colleges of Nursing highlighted the DNP’s essential role in advancing evidence-based
practice, policy development, and organizational leadership (Hanners et al., 2023).
These competencies are indispensable when addressing multifaceted national
practice problems such as chronic illness management, health disparities, and
access to care.
A practice problem to examine is the growing prevalence of depression and anxiety.
According to Kieling et al. (2024), mental health conditions represent a significant
proportion of years lived with disability in the United States and globally. The problem
aVects multiple fields including psychiatric care, cardiology, oncology, and other
specialties. This shows its extensive eVects and the need for urgent interventions to
improve patient outcomes. Patients with untreated or undertreated depression are
less likely to adhere to medication regimens. This increases the risk of developing
health complications such as chronic diseases, and often face increased healthcare
costs (Last et al., 2021). The existing challenge is persistent gaps in integrating mental
health care into traditional healthcare models.
Addressing mental health requires more than clinical knowledge. Leaders are
expected to participate in interdisciplinary collaboration. The approach is expected to
provide a comprehensive solution to the existing challenges. This is because the team
will provide diverse perspectives that are crucial for problem solving (Warren &
Warren, 2023). Systems of care should be integrated for better eViciency. The
adjustment will promote delivery of high-quality care in the healthcare system. This is
because of improved communication and collaboration among healthcare
professionals (Isaacs & Mitchell, 2024). There should be policies that expand access
to care. More people need to benefit from mental healthcare services. This requires
development and implementation of inclusive policies for better mental health
outcomes (Hailemichael et al., 2025).
The DNP-prepared nurse is well-positioned to lead this work. They are equipped with
the knowledge and skills to apply complexity science and systems thinking to develop
comprehensive solutions. This is appropriate given the complex challenges that aVect
delivery of mental health services (Stellflug & Auerbach, 2025). They can develop
innovative care models that integrate behavioral health into primary care practices.
The approach helps improve delivery of patient-centered care to enhance health
outcomes. This is attributed to the inclusion of unique patient factors in delivery of
personalized care. The expertise of DNP-prepared nurse can help reduce stigma and
improve accessibility (Stellflug & Auerbach, 2025). Stigma remains a barrier in delivery

of mental healthcare services. This is because it discourages many people in the
community from seeking appropriate services. It requires use of innovative strategies
such as health promotion to create awareness on existing mental health services. The
comprehensive approach is highly likely to yield positive results because
collaborative care models that pair primary care providers with behavioral health
specialists have demonstrated success. The limitation of the intervention is
inconsistent implementation. The nurse can advocate for adoption of these models
and facilitate assessment across diverse populations (Stellflug & Auerbach, 2025).
DNP-prepared nurses are competent to head interprofessional groups. Isaacs and
Mitchell (2024) emphasized that collaboration across medicine, nursing, social work,
and public health is essential in tackling global practice problems. This is a crucial
aspect of the mental health care delivery process. Social determinants of health, such
as poverty and unstable housing, contribute to the eVects of mental illness. This
highlights the need for interprofessional collaboration to develop comprehensive
solutions (Stellflug & Auerbach, 2025). In my current role in the ICU, I have seen how
unaddressed mental health issues aVect patients’ recovery and long-term outcomes.
Beyond the ICU, I am an active participant on a geriatrics committee focused on aging
patients, where our work includes finding eVective ways to reach vulnerable
populations and engage nurses in collaboration to improve outcomes. These
experiences reinforce the importance of system-level thinking when addressing
complex health challenges (Warren & Warren, 2023).
