Chapter 12 deals with academic and social-emotional struggles such as: study skills deficits, test anxiety, school attendance, changing schools, difficulty with friendships, bullying, sexual orientation struggles, intimacy and dating, and intimate partner violence.  

Based on your professional experience, choose one of these topics and provide at least one relevant experience/situation that you have encountered. Please explain what happened and the resolution that you provided as a counselor. Why is this experience meaningful to other counselors in training?

 For those students who do not have any experience with these groups, choose one of the above topics and explain a possible, future situation that you might encounter in the professional setting. What would you do to rectify and assist with this problem?  Explain.

Respond to at least two other classmate’s posts.

Part 2: Respond to two students response (25-65 words)

Student 1:

Unfortunately, I have not had any experience as a counselor yet. Based on the text, school change seems like a topic that can be interesting to navigate with a student. Nonnormative school changes in particular sound the most difficult. While I was in the military, many of my co-workers had children and they had to deal with this. The biggest issue I saw for children was moving regions like from the South to the North. Bullying was something that these children dealt with due to their accent. This works on two topics with the school change and bullying. If I were their counselor, I would start with social skills. Moving regionally has a bit of culture shift. Helping them learn some of the local customs and culturally differences may make a difference for them. Second, I would want to push coping skills. Unfortunately, shedding words like y’all and ain’t ain’t easy. Helping them learn how to deal with bullies and how to accept themselves will help them long-term since they will likely move again. Finally, I would want to help them find interests. If they like an activity encourage them to join a club and make new friends that way. 

Student 2:

In my professional work, outside of counseling, I work as a deputy Title IX Coordinator on a college campus. While I am not providing counseling services directly, this role allows me to interact with students who have been involved in relationship violence. I used trauma informed practice when interviewing and interacting with students. I also gather resources for and provide support to these students. We partner closely with the counseling center on campus to ensure any student involved in relationship violence has a person they can confide in and process the experience with. As a counselor, I have had several clients who have been impacted by relationship violence. I have worked to provided community resources such as Family Guidance Center, One Place Justice Center, and Child Protect to these client’s to help ensure their safety and work with them to maintain a safe environment. While my primary focus is attending to the client who is 18+, we often talk about the impact on their children. I always encourage clients with children who hav been impacted by relationship violence to seek counseling for them and remain in close contact with their school counselors. 

These experiences are meaningful because they allow counselors to provide stability in what is likely one of the most difficult and chaotic times in a person’s life. They allow an important opportunity to provide support and an avenue for the client to focus on themselves and how they are impacted.
