Module 3 – Case

EMPLOYEE BENEFITS

Assignment Overview

Signature Assignment: Body of Knowledge, Reinforced Level

In this assignment, your body of knowledge skills will be assessed.
The body of knowledge rubric will be useful for this purpose. In
HRM402, your body of knowledge skills were assessed at the
“introduced” level. In MGT411, they will be assessed at the
“reinforced” level. Finally, in MGT412, your body of knowledge skills
will be assessed at the “emphasized” level. The skills needed in
these three assignments build on each other and offer you the
opportunity to enhance and practice your written communication
skills. The grading rubric for written communication at the
undergraduate level has been developed to measure student
success in meeting the MGT411 Case 3 expectations. Rubrics for
the other two courses are included in their respective assignments.

Review the required background readings for this Module, paying
special attention to the differences between mandated and
voluntary benefits and perks. As you have learned, some benefits
are required by law while others are voluntarily offered by
employers to entice new talent. After reading the article, Types of
Employee Benefits and Perks, for an overview of the employee
benefits area, conduct additional research regarding the different
employee benefits offered today to employees by employers.

This Case assignment has 5 parts:

1. Create a benefit plan for a fictitious company you select. First,
select the mandated parts of the benefits plan you want to offer
your employees. What are the laws that mandate these benefits?

2. Develop another list of additional benefits or perks you want to
use to attract new talent.

3. Explain in great detail why you selected each benefit or perk and
why you did not select others.

4. What additional benefits not mentioned in the readings do other
employers offer that make them one of the companies that
people want to work for?

5. As you know, health insurance coverage is not always provided
to employees. What are the laws surrounding when employers
are required to offer health insurance coverage to its employees?

You have a choice: Your submission can be a 3- to 4-page Word
document (not counting the cover page or the reference page), a
10- to 12-slide presentation (not counting the cover slide or
reference list slide), or a 4-page informational flyer to hand out to
the company’s new employees.

If you opt to create a PowerPoint presentation, remember that
workers want to see presentations that have five words and a
picture on every slide, and the pictures must be of real people,
preferably employees of the company giving the presentation. Make
your presentation colorful yet professional, preferably with only one
font style, though a couple of different font sizes may be used.

If you opt to create a 4-page informational flyer for employees,
make it colorful yet professional. Use no more than three different
font styles on the pages.

Utilize at least three valid sources of information, at least two of
them peer-reviewed academic journal articles from the Trident
Online Library. Citing sources of information in the text as well as in
the reference list at the end of your assignment is required.

MBA 580 Organization Overview   (Processes, Structure, Culture)  Your company manufactures and distributes automobiles across six continents. The structure is very  complex and it is difficult to accurately count the levels of hierarchy. The company operates under a tall  matrixed structure design.   Tall structures can be cumbersome, and decision makers are often those farthest from the customer.  Communication can be slow and difficult, also slowing down decisionmaking speed. The specialized  functions and organizations, often referred to as centers of excellence or centers of expertise (COE),  allow for deep knowledge and expertise. Your company has many functional COEs where increased  structure, governance, and control allow for resource and process efficiencies. Resources are  centralized, reducing duplication of effort across the organization. These efficiencies can, however,  result in rigid, inflexible processes. In addition, COEs can create functional silos or reduced cross functional coordination and lack of connectedness, where each function is striving toward its own  unique objectives.  Your company follows a centralized and standardized approach where enterprisewide decisions are  often made centrally and at the top of the hierarchy. This centralization makes it easier to implement  common policies and practices, prevents parts of the organization from becoming too independent, and  capitalizes on specialization.  Matrixed organizations are often associated with this specialized COE structure. Rather than having  permanent crossfunctional teams or organizations working on specific projects or product launches,  matrixed organizations pull teams together from the various functional departments. Specialists are  pulled from functional areas to work on a specific project or product design. In essence, they report to  two managers at the same time and may work on multiple projects simultaneously. Although the project  manager, who is on the same leadership level as the functional vice president (VP), supervises the  project, the true management authority still resides with the VP.  Specialists supporting specific product launches generally remain “seated” with their functional team but meet regularly with their product team to advance the project. They may be fully dedicated to the  project or still work on other unrelated projects.  Finally, product teams are pulled together at the enterprise level and are not regionspecific. Although  they may produce differentiated projects for unique regions, their primary focus is on enterprisewide  initiatives.
