You may use books, journal articles (from this course or peer-reviewed articles you find on your own), summary papers, notes, etc. to assist you with completing this exam. 1. Chriss (2022) argues that “socialization” is the starting point for any system of social control. What is socialization and how does it influence conformity and deviance? Explain the main “agents” of socialization and discuss their impact on social control using evidence from the assigned journal articles to bolster your argument.

2. From a research perspective, social control can function and be studied as either an independent or dependent variable. Explain why this is the case. Provide one example from the assigned journal articles of social control being examined as an independent variable and one example of social control being treated as a dependent variable. Based on the studies’ results, what are some potential causes or consequences of social control?

3. Lippman (2024), discusses the importance of deterrence as primary function of legal punishments. Deterrence theory posits that if punishments are certain, severe, and swift enough, citizens will be discouraged from engaging in deviant behavior. For example, touching a hot stove deters because all three propositions of deterrence theory can be met (certainty, severity, and speed of punishment). From a policy perspective, can we make our criminal justice system more like a hot stove? In other words, can American society make our formal punishments more certain, swift, and severe? Why or why not? If we can, what might be some unintended consequences? If we cannot, explain why.

4. Chriss (2022) suggests there are three primary types of social control: legal, medical, and informal. First, provide an example of each type of social control individually. Second, give two examples of how society can integrate multiple types of social control to shape behavior. Finally, make an argument for which type of social control is the most effective.

5. Medicalization can have both positive and negative implications for individuals and society. In this essay, critically examine the pros and cons of medicalization as a form of social control.
