BOOK REVIEW GUIDANCE
General Guidelines
· 1250-1500 words (not including title page and bibliography)
· Page one is the cover page
· Last page is the bibliography
· double-spaced
· 12 point Times New Roman Font
· 1 inch margins
· You will cite using Chicago Manual of Style (academic standard for historical writing)
· Use footnotes to cite sources of quotations
· Include a complete biography
· Example Citation for a Book by One Author as follows:
· You will only need citations if you use direct quotes from your book. Just simply cite the page number.
Footnotes Example (at the bottom of each page where citations have been used:
1.William Faulkner, Absalom, Absalom! (New York: Vintage Books, 1990), 271.
2. Ibid., 277.
Bibliography (last page):
Faulkner, William. Absalom, Absalom!. New York: Vintage Books, 1990.
Use the following as an outline for the book review.
1) Provide an opening statement and overview. Who was the author? What is their background? Scholar, soldier, etc. What is the main theme of the book? What sources did the author use in writing this work? Was the book biased towards one side or another, or towards any individual?
2) What is the main relevance to the US Military? Lessons learned? Military/technological advancements? Decisive battle? Turning point in the war? Etc.
3) Provide your opinion? Did it clear any misconceptions you may have had? Would you recommend this reading? Did the reading assist your overall understanding of our military? Were there examples of exemplary leadership? Examples of poor leadership?
4) Provide a conclusion statement.
