COM200 Interpersonal Communication

SELF-CONCEPT ESSAY AND VIDEO

PURPOSE

Our goal in this course is to increase interpersonal communication competence. This

assignment aims to determine what your Self-concept is, starting at the beginning of the course.

Reflect upon how you grew up; and what communication patterns you experienced with your

significant caregiver. Did your developmental experiences create a positive and healthy sense

of Self, or an unhealthy negative sense of Self? Ultimately, what is your Self-concept at this

moment in time? This assignment consists of PART A and B. In part A you will answer the

following questions/statements addressing your current concept of Self. In part B, you will

answer the following questions/statements addressing how your concept of Self has changed

based on your acquired knowledge and a new awareness of Self and Relational communication

in this course.

GUIDELINES AND REQUIREMENTS

1. Create an MS Word document entitled Self-Concept Essay and Video with your name in

the heading.

2. Provide a two-page, 12 pitch-font, and double-spaced essay containing the following

information. I will accept a question-and-answer format. The following are some sample

questions/statements. You can create additional or other questions if you wish.

 What is my Self-concept right now? Has it changed from adolescence? How so?

 Why do I have this concept of Self?

 I am or am not satisfied with my current concept of Self…

 I would like to change ___ regarding my current concept of Self…

 Others view my Self as __________________.

3. Create a video, via YouTube, highlighting these answers. Check the video to ensure

that the link is correct. If I cannot open the video or access the link, the assignment is

late, and no credit can be earned. See the course syllabus.

4. Submit both the essay and video together. It is important that I have your written and

spoken words to understand your Self-concept better. To earn grade credit, both the

essay and video need to be submitted together in the designated folder by the due date.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

1. Increase understanding of the key concepts among communication and the Self CH2).

2. Increase an honest understanding of your concept of Self.

3. Increase an honest understanding of how others view your Self.

4. Increase your understanding of what relational communication influences functioned to

develop your Self and concept of Self.

5. Closely examine your level of satisfaction with your current concept of Self.

6. Understand what aspects you would like to change or modify with your concept of Self?

7. Understand what aspects of your Self-concept that do not need changing.

8. Understand how your current perception of self-concept affects all of your relationships,

whether professionally or personally, and whether they are intimate or distant.

9. Increase communication competence.

GRADING RUBRIC

Self-Concept essays are unique to the individual. However, guidelines need to be applied and

adhered to for effective learning.

A-90-100 (Excellent) = the essay conveys solid/excellent understanding of the key concepts

addressed in the readings/lectures. Excellent higher-level thinking is engaged to effectively

connect key concepts with individual lived communication experiences and Self-Concept. Solid

examples are provided. The content reflects meaning, deep-thought, serious reflection and

demonstrates a new awareness that is increasing communication competence. The essay is

logical and coherent with excellent organization of expressed thoughts. The content contains

excellent substance. The writing conveys proofing, editing, and excellent scholarship.

B-80-89 (Good) = the essay conveys good understanding of the key concepts addressed in the

readings/lectures. Good higher-level thinking is engaged in much of the entry to connect to key

concepts with communication experiences and Self-concept. Overall good examples are

provided in areas. The content reflects in areas: good meaning, deep-thought, reflection and

conveys signs of new awareness that will increase communication competence. The essay is

logical and coherent in areas with good organization. The content contains good substance. The

writing conveys overall attention to proofing and editing in areas with good scholarship.

C-70-79 (Satisfactory) = the essay conveys some understanding of the key concepts

addressed in the readings/lectures. Thinking is satisfactory, with some connection to key

concepts addressed in the readings/lectures to Self-concept. Adequate examples are provided.

The content does not effectively convey an awareness that will increase communication

competence. The writing contains need for stronger: logic, coherence, organization as well as;

proofing and editing. Average scholarship is demonstrated.

Less than satisfactory work demonstrates D-level work.
