Part 1
Please do without the textbook and use the four steps of communicationg assertively that is posted below.
Sometimes people confuse being aggressive with being assertive. To assert your rights is to calmly state how you feel and propose a solution, while being aggressive is forcing your ideas on others. Rather than stating your opinion, you use a hostile tone and demanding your desires, the response you receive may either be equally aggressive and an argument escalates, or there is no response, the receiver shuts down, and no communication takes place. Many times aggressive communication creates more conflict.
The Lecture Notes for Chapter 5 explains the four steps to communicating assertively:
1) define the problem, 2) state how the problem affects you, 3) propose solutions that are workable, and 4) confirm understanding
. It is important to know when you should assert your rights and when it may be best to not give an assertive response. For example, if it is pouring rain outside but your grandmother wants you to take her to the store, rather than assert your right not to go out in the rain, you may be accommodating so as not to hurt her feelings.
The Prompt:
“A friend borrows $50 and promises to pay you back tomorrow. But tomorrow passes, as do 20 other tomorrows, and there is no sign of the money. You know that the person has not forgotten about it and you also know that the person has more than enough money to pay you back. How might you assertively ask for your money back? What obstacles might you face? What might happen if you are unassertive or aggressive?”
Part 2
Please read the following information related to concussions and then answer the questions below: Country is Saudi Arabia and the sport is soccer
The brain sits in the cranium, surrounded by cerebral fluid. When a severe blow to the head occurs, the brain may collide with the cranium, then “bounce back” and collide with the opposite side of the cranium. At the neuronal level, a concussive blow to the head results in a twisting or stretching of the axons, creating swelling. Eventually, the swelling may subside, and neurons may return to normal functioning. However, if the swelling of axons is severe enough, these axons may disintegrate and even cause permanent damage. Many athletes will experience multiple concussions throughout their careers. Recently, in the U.S., the NFL has stated that it expects 1 in 3 former players to develop long-term cognitive issues.
1. What is a sport in
your assigned country where concussions can and commonly occur?
2. What are at least two specific brain structures at risk of being affected by a concussion in this sport? What are the functions of these brain structures?
3. Based on the functions of the specific brain structures you chose, what are some temporary symptoms an individual may experience from trauma to those areas? What long-term issues can be seen from permanent damage to those areas in the brain?
(Note – all these symptoms should be linked to the functions of the structures you discuss
in question 2!)
4. Find one example of a player who experienced issues following a concussion from the sport in your assigned country you listed above in question 1. Explain what happened to this individual and how it affected their life.
5. Are there any regulations for this sport in that country? What are those regulations, and do you believe they are sufficient (why or why not)?
Response Post (due Sunday, February 1, by 11:59 PM):
For your response post, reply to a classmate’s initial post whose research on their assigned country was similar to your research,
OR select a classmate whose research on their assigned country was different from your research, and answer the following questions
If you selected a similar country, reply to that classmate and answer the following questions:
1. What similarities do you notice between the two countries? Describe them.
2. Why do you think these two specific countries are similar in this way?
3.
Note – do *not* just state that these countries are similar cultures. Explain what about these two cultures might explain these similarities
4. What are some regulations that you think should be implemented for the sport discussed by your classmate to avoid permanent damage and long-term issues in athletes of that sport?
*OR*
If you selected a different country, reply to that classmate and answer the following questions:
1. What differences do you notice between the two countries? Describe them.
2. Why do you think these two specific countries are different in this way?
3.
Note – do *not* just state that these countries are different cultures. Explain what about these two different cultures might explain these differences
4. What are some regulations that you think should be implemented for the sport discussed by your classmate to avoid permanent damage and long-term issues in athletes of that sport?
