For this assignment, act as if you are the human resources coordinator at your health care organization. There have been some employee complaints regarding possible discrimination based on cultural beliefs. You have been tasked with forming a committee that promotes understanding the applicable laws and the benefits of diversity and creating an inclusive and safe environment. In pulling the team together, your first step is to educate them on several key points to meet these objectives, including:

  • Review of the basis and purpose of equal employment opportunity laws. Include how these laws prevent discrimination and can guide organizational culture.
  • Investigate the nature of statutory and contractual rights in employee/employer relations by providing examples of these rights and how they protect both employees and employers.
  • Describe the impact of the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) on health care organizations. Include the protections unions provide for employees, the importance of collaboration with unions, and how discrimination is handled for unionized employees.
  • Select multiple cultural diversity considerations the HR department may need to address that affect company culture, such as communication barriers, unconscious, implicit bias, differences in health beliefs and practices, religious and spiritual beliefs, etc., that may be related to the recent employee complaints.
  • Explain multiple possible strategies that may address these challenges, such as manager/employee training programs, hiring and retaining a diverse staff, community engagement, a focus on cultural change, and new policies that the committee may wish to consider.
