Building Better Relationships

As a newly promoted Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) in a major medical corporation experiencing unrest and distrust among employees, it is essential to identify the organization’s goals to implement and promote change. In doing so, one must be strategic in exemplifying effective leadership skills. As a democratic leader, the goal is to encourage each member to participate in decision-making, impacting the company’s movement. Movement within an organization is essential for promoting employee growth, engagement, and retention, contributing to the organization’s adaptability and long-term success (Darmawan, 2024).

According to Tiliuta and Diaconu (2021), there is a unique difference between leadership and management. Management typically controls a group to achieve goals. It surrounds planning, organizing, and controlling the functions within an organization. On the other hand, leadership influences, motivate and inspire others to contribute to the organization’s success (Tiliuta and Diaconu, 2021).  However, while leadership and management have distinct roles and responsibilities, they share commonalities in goal orientation, decision-making, communication, people management, problem-solving, and adaptability within the organization.

As CNO, the actions I would take to show my vow towards improving relationships between administration and employees would surround communication and employee engagement. Communication is vital in the workplace. The first action would be to create different communication outlets. This would facilitate an open platform to share thoughts, ideas, and feedback about issues.  Platforms include scheduled catered staff luncheons, company engagement meetings, and training programs. Communication promotes staff working together and fosters respect for one another to help support a positive work environment (Lubis (2024).

The second action would be to promote employee engagement. According to Lubis (2024), employees are engaged when they are more committed and accepting of the different changes within the company. Promoting high employee engagement is associated with high performance. The involved staff greatly impacts the organization’s performance (Willett, LaGree, Shin, Houston, and Duffy, 2023). This results in more focused, team-oriented employees who are united into groups and motivated to fulfill their job responsibilities, which aligns with organizational objectives. The plan to foster employee engagement would include planned company outings, frequent employee engagement surveys, requests for and utilizing employee feedback, and ensuring managers are engaged.
