Prepare your Workflow Analysis Paper  Part II. ( Using APA Format)

  1. Introduction
  2. Your Selected Process
    • Describe in writing your Workflow Diagram, including EBP and safety issues
    • Significance of the process to patient, staff, and organizational outcomes
    • Problems (actual and potential) associated with the process workflow experienced by patients, staff, and organization
    • The expected outcome for patient, staff, and organization as a result of improving the process workflow
  3. Process Owners – Individuals (by role), departments, and groups involved in the process
  4. Process Map (detail in writing using the Workflow Diagram)
  5. Findings – Address the Following Questions:
  •
    • Is there a problem with the current performance? Do you need better results?
    • Have you been skipping any critical steps? Are you aware of work arounds?
    • Are all steps necessary? Are there areas of unnecessary duplication or redundancy?
    • How often do you have to do each step?
    • Are there areas that rely on an individual to “remember” to do something? Any process that relies on memory is prone to error.
    • What happens if the process breaks down? Do you need a fail-safe mechanism?
    • Can some steps be done simultaneously?
    • Is there a more logical way to sequence the steps?
    • What skills are necessary to perform each step?
    • If more skills are required, can current staff be trained or do duties need to be shifted to more qualified staff?
    • Could someone with fewer skills perform this step? Would they need training or support? Could someone be hired to perform this step? Could this step be outsourced?
    • Is there any technology that would make this process more efficient or easier to do?
    • Is there an entirely different way to get this done?
    • Who do you know that handles this task very well (an exemplar)? Can you study their workflow?
