GUIDELINES FOR ORGANIZATIONAL ANALYSIS ASSIGNMENT

After reviewing the keynote and studying the readings, you should now be ready to proceed
with your assignment. In this assignment, you will conduct a remote organizational
analysis based on what you have learned from the readings in this unit.

Choose an organization from the list found in the Week One Module.

Please note: Due to the number of students enrolled in the multiple sections of NU 613, we
respectfully ask that you do not make direct contact with the facility. Use the information
available to the public online to complete your assessment.

All assignments are to be submitted electronically within the course. Because the faculty receive
many of the same assignments a file naming format is established for all student submissions. The
file naming standard is as follows:

File naming standard: Student’s Last name, First name, Class Number with section, and
Assignment Name. For example, Doe-Jane-NU613.801-Organizational Analysis Paper

Please submit your paper as a pdf document.

Your paper will automatically be submitted to Turnitin when you submit the assignment. You can
review and revise the paper and resubmit it based on any identified concerns in the Turnitin
report until the due date. Caution: Papers resubmitted after the due date will be treated as late
papers and the late penalty described in the syllabus will apply. Submit the assignment at least 48
to 72 hours before the due date to ensure time to obtain the Turnitin report back. Extensions will
NOT be granted if you wait to the last minute to submit an assignment or do not receive a report
back in time for revisions.

Early grading: Faculty may be available to grade the paper before the due date if you have
completed your review of the Turnitin report. If your submission is ready for grading prior to the
due date, please place a comment in the assignment area that the submission is final and ready for
grading.

Scholarship Expectations:

The assignment will be formatted based on the APA7th edition. There will be a title page and
headings used appropriately. Clarity and conciseness in writing, grammar and spelling will be
consistent with graduate level work. Please use Times New Roman font in a 12 setting.
Although APA does allow other fonts, for purposes of this assignment, only the one font, Times
New Roman at a 12 setting is allowed. Use primary sources when available for citing and
referencing content in the paper.

You are clinical nurse scholars in the making. You are the nurses with advanced education/ DNPs
and members of the highly literate profession of advanced practice nursing who will chart the
future of health care. Good writing ability is as much a required skill for nurses in advanced
practice as performing clinical functions. Therefore, precision and scholarship is expected in all
assignments.

Organizational Analysis Rubric
Introduction paragraph (one paragraph). There must be a thesis statement at the end of the
paragraph that tells the reader the purpose of paper and what will be discussed.

Before you begin the analysis of the hospital, establish healthcare organizations in the 21st century as
complex adaptive systems.
What does a leader need to understand about change in a CAS?
Discuss the leadership challenges of transformation of complex systems.

Introducing the Organization
Identify an organization you selected for review from the list. Review the
organization’s website.
Provide a basic introduction to the organization.
Give an overall description the mission, values and community work of the organization.
Describe the size of the organization.

Is the organization a for-profit or not -for profit-structure?
Evaluate the Community Needs assessment for the facility and/or the annual report or if the
organization is a for-profit, the annual report for shareholders. What opportunities for the
future work of the organization are identified? .

Can’t find the Community Health Needs assessment for a not-for-profit facility? Look at other
information available on the site and summarize what you can and note the report is not
readily available. Interestingly, the report is required every 3 years and should be available but
you may find the facility you are reviewing is out of compliance.

Culture:
Describe Edgar Schein’s definition of culture including artifacts, espouse values and assumptions.
Examine the organizations human resources information as well as any literature or websites
describing the organization. Based on Schein’s definition of culture, seek outward evidence of the
culture by reviewing the selected organization’s newsletters, ads, and pictures.

Describe the observable culture of the organization based on Edgar Schein’s model.

Price Transparency: From the CMS website: Hospital price transparency helps Americans
know the cost of a hospital item or service before receiving it. Starting January 1, 2021, each
hospital operating in the United States will be required to provide clear, accessible pricing
information online about the items and services they provide in two ways: 1. As a
comprehensive machine- readable file with all items and services. 2. In a display of shoppable
services in a consumer-friendly format.

Can you find the transparent cost of a hospital item on the hospital’s website? Was it difficult
to find?
Choose any two items and compare the cost of the items at the facility selected for the
organizational analysis (OA) to a facility in the same region. For example, if the facility for
the analysis in Wyoming, choose another Wyoming hospital for comparison. Is the OA
facility a lower or higher cost provider? You must include the amounts of each item that you
compared .

What do Others Say About the Organization?
Recognition: Is the organization listed as a Malcolm Baldridge Award recipient?

Discuss the reasons an organization might consider applying for the

Malcolm Baldridge Award.
Did the organization list other certifications such as Stroke designation, or Cardiac
designations, etc.?

Is the facility Magnet designated? What value would Magnet designation potentially bring to
the facility?

Assess the LeapFrog scores for the hospital

What is the letter grade for the facility? What are the specific concerns contributing to the
score. What does the score mean?

LeapFrog does provide some information about the staffing and the number of BSNs however
the information is broad and does not provide conclusive data for the score. Instead, look at
areas such as infection rates, falls, etc.

Conclusion
Summarize the essential points of the analysis of the organization. What conclusions were
reached based on the assessment?

Scholarship
Demonstrate Graduate Level Scholarship.
1. Formal, scholarly writing style; no first-
person language. Use Times New Roman font with a 12 setting for size.

2. Writing should be clear and concise.

3. Organize work by headings.

4. Writing should be free of APA errors.

5. The assignment will automatically be submitted to Turnitin when the assignment is
submitted. Turnitin is set up to disregard the reference list. Review the Turnitin report for
areas that may have been used in other sources including your own past work. Paraphrase the
content as needed and resubmit the assignment until the due date. If the student has added a
comment in the course assignment area that the paper is ready for early grading, it can no
longer be revised and resubmitted.
