In forensic science, there are many different techniques that can be utilized to gather evidence from vehicles. The first is through looking at the tire impressions at the scene. Investigators use casting materials to make a model of the tire tread impressions found at the crime scene. Once they are collected, the tread patterns are then looked over to determine the specific vehicle they belong to. The reconstruction of vehicle evidence is a complex process that is necessary to utilize in the investigative process. One of the ways vehicles provide forensic evidence is through data retrieved from Event Data Recorders or (EDRs). EDRs provide information about the vehicle prior to a crash such as speed, throttle position, braking intensity, and deployment of airbags. Investigators can reconstruct the vehicle’s movements leading up to an event, helping to establish a timeline. Forensic investigation of vehicles also provides digital forensics and GPS information. Many vehicles are now equipped with GPS and communication systems that record locations and the routes the vehicle takes. This can provide insight for traffic incidents but also for criminal investigations as well. One limitation of forensic evidence is the potential for manipulation or alteration, because vehicle data can be altered or deleted. One example is a case from 2017 in regards to a Tesla. There were concerns raised about the potential for tampering with the vehicles logs that record speed and other information.
