BIOL180 Course Project Guide

This document serves as a brief summary of the Course Project, a multi-step assessment

that is designed to demonstrate the learning objectives of this course.

In Week 2, you will select one species to research for ALL of the Course Project steps.

Project Steps

This project consists of three Discussions (Weeks 1,2, and 8) and four Assignments (Mini-

Presentation, Assignments 1 – 3).

The descriptions below are meant to be an overview that will help you understand the various

steps in this term-wide assignment. Complete instructions, examples, and grading

criteria/rubrics will be provided each week in the Discussion or Assignments areas when the

step is due.

Discussion 1 – Thinking about which species interests you

In the Week 1 Discussion, along with introducing yourself and completing the other parts of the

discussion, you will think about and share specific species (microorganism, plant, animal, or

fungus) that you may be interested in researching for your Course Project. (Note that in Week

2, you will make your final decision and only research one species.)

Mini-Presentation Assignment- Species Choice (Due Week 2)

For this week, you will create a very short mini-presentation (three to four concise slides)

introducing your topic (species) that you will continue to research over the next seven weeks of

the course. You will submit your Mini-presentation in the Assignments link (under Course

Tools).

Discussion 2 – Evaluating Resources (Due Week 2)

In week two, you will select one source relevant to your chosen species from the open web

(or the Trefry Library). You will evaluate the source by explaining why it is or is not

academically and scientifically credible and provide the source’s reference in APA format. If

you determine that it isn’t a credible source, you will not use it for your Course Project

Assignments.

Assignment 1 – Annotated Bibliography (Due Week 3)

The Annotated Bibliography will help you determine the credibility and relevance of reference

sources you may consider using for your Outline and Final Presentation assignments. See

details about this assignment located in the Assignments link.

Assignment 2 – The Outline (Due Week 5)

For this assignment, you will submit an alphanumeric outline of your presentation. This will

help you structure your presentation and ensure that all the expected and required

topics/subtopics are included. See details about this assignment located in the Assignments

link.

Assignment 3 – The Final Presentation (Due Week 7)

Putting it all together, you will develop your presentation based on the work you submitted

for all of the steps to date as well as the instructor feedback you were given. See details

about this assignment located in the Assignments link.

Discussion 8- Share your Final Presentation and discuss your topic with the class

(Due Week 8)

For this Discussion, you will share your presentation with your classmates and discuss your

experience.
