CAS Standards Presentation

General Instructions

The Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS) is a consortium of
professional associations that work to promote the improvement of programs and services in the
College Student Affairs profession. This organization publishes a book entitled “CAS
Professional Standards for Higher Education” that outlines the standards for practice and
preparation for each of the functional areas of Student Affairs (i.e., Housing, Counseling
Services, Career Services, Academic Advising, Greek Life, etc.). Every Student Affairs
professional should be familiar with the mission, goals, learning outcomes, ethics, and other
related standards of the specific student affairs area in which they work. The CAS Standards
provide such information.

As part of your concentration area portfolio (i.e., Housing, Academic Advising, Career Services,
etc.), develop a PowerPoint presentation outlining the major points of the CAS Standards
aligned to your assigned concentration area. Develop the PowerPoint for a group of
professionals who work in a department within the concentration area, with the goal of
educating them on the CAS Standards for that specific Student Affairs department.

Include the following components in your presentation:

• Mission
• Program Components
• Leadership Responsibilities
• Human Resources
• Ethics
• Diversity, Equity, and Access Issues
• Institutional and External Relations
• Technology
• Facilities and Equipment
• Assessment and Evaluation

Note: The UWA library has an electronic copy of the CAS Standards Manual that you can
access. You may contact a UWA librarian for assistance if needed.

SA501 Graduate Students: Include 10-12 slides in the presentation.

SAL401 Undergraduate Students: Include 7-8 slides in the presentation.

Format Guidelines:

• Create a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation consisting of a maximum of 7 lines of text
per slide (this is to prevent “information overload” on slides). Use 20-point font or larger
for readability. Remember that the purpose of a PowerPoint presentation is not to use
lots of text but to use bullet points and graphics to convey information.

• Presentations should be creative, visually appealing, and include technology (i.e.,
YouTube videos, digital images, etc.). Please avoid using Microsoft Word “clip art”
images.

• Students should use APA, 7th ed. formatting to cite all sources.
• All presentations should use proper grammar, spelling, etc., appropriate for a graduate-

level presentation.
