Learning animation can be very challenging yet very fun. Navigate to the Powtoon website,

click Pricing in the top menu, scroll down, and click FREE Start Now $0 free. Create an account

if you do not already have an account. Also, if you do not have a Google/Gmail account for

YouTube, please do create one so you can export your project.

Learning Aids
After creating your account, you can use any feature or template to create the commercial.

Once again, you don’t have to pay for anything. Watch the videos below and play with the

software. They are good videos to get you started as I have previewed them myself. You may

also find other videos on YouTube. The screens in the video may look a little different as they

could be made with previous iterations of the application; but, everything is still pretty much

the same.

Project Creation:

Note: Powtoon is a web application. These instructions may not be exactly worded as the user

interface. The company can change things daily or hourly at will. This is the advantage of being

a web application; Updates can happen immediately from one day to next.

Powtoon procedures: Write Script, Record Voiceover, and Add Visuals. It works. Step 1 has

been completed for you below.

Task:

Choose one of the following scripts to create a commercial. Once you choose the script below,

You can record your own voice narration in Audacity or use an AI text to Speech generator to

convert the text to audio. If you use the AI text to Speech route, Eleven Labs is my choice for

this project. Your PowToon must have audio dialog. You must include background music.

Background music helps the flow of the commercial and effectiveness.

In Powtoon, choose template, storyboard, or customize a popular template. Create the

Powtoon based on the learning aids above, the grading criteria deductions, and your vision for

the commercial. To ensure the final product fits the scripts below, it might be best to start

from scratch. I am looking to see an effective production. It is a commercial to sell a product

or service.

Choose one of the following scripts to create your animated commercial:

You may need to chop/edit the downloaded AI voice narration in Audacity.

Exporting, Uploading, Closed Captioning, and Sharing:

After editing, you will need to export your animation to your YouTube account. Under upload,

select the YouTube icon to begin the process of uploading. After the video has uploaded to

YouTube, you will need to close caption the animation. Use the YouTube Creator Studio to

accomplish this task. Select edit for the video. Click the last menu item Subtitles/CC. Click Add

new subtitles or CC and select the language of your subtitles (English) to set the language.

Again, click Add new subtitles or CC and select English. Copy and paste the script at the

appropriate timecode using the closed captioning editor if necessary. After publishing

(unlisted) the video in YouTube, make sure to retrieve your YouTube link to the video. Note:

YouTube does have automatic closed captioning. You can choose to edit subtitles if necessary.

Project Submission:

You will submit the Share URL to your video:

In the comment box, copy and paste your YouTube link to your animation. Make sure it

works!

Grading Criteria Commercial Project: (100pts)

You will be graded based on the use of tools in the software, performance, and effectiveness of

the production. I expect to see character movement, transitions, character animations, clean

audio, text effects, props, music, and closed captioning. Your video should be no longer than 45

seconds. 30 – 45 seconds is more than enough. None submission will result in a zero. No audio

dialog results in a 40pt deduction. No background music results in a 15pt deduction. Lowest

score possible is a zero.

Grading Criteria Deductions:

No audio dialogue in video results in a 40pt deduction

No background music results in a 15pt deduction

No closed captioning in video results in a 30pt deduction

5pts each for no characters/text
15pts for no character animations and movement
10pts for no props/specials/graphs
5pt for no text effect
5pt for no background
15pts for unclear audio overall (also background music should be in the background)
10pts for background noise prohibiting clear audio and background music
1pt for each inadvertent background noise in audio
1pt for each unclear word
Up to -15pts if animation does not flow and feels dull and void of energy.

(really choppy and not convincing)

None submission will result in a one hundred point deduction (-100pt). Maximum point

deduction is one hundred points.
