Presentation Instructions

Speech will provide information about a particular country/cultural group and will involve a demonstration of cultural communication tendencies.   All presentations will need to show an understanding of Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions and Hall’s Cultural differences, and of certain Verbal and Nonverbal Communication details regarding the country.  Presentations will be assessed according to the substance of the material presented, effectiveness of delivery (extemporaneousness), use of relevant research, and overall effort and ability of the presenter.

For the presentation, you are speaking to Americans who are planning on going to a different country for an exchange program (you can decide if it is a student exchange or some sort of business venture – but whatever you choose needs to be made clear in your presentation content).  Your audience has no experience with this other country or their cultural practices.  You are an expert on Intercultural Communication in general, and on this country in particular.  Your task is to prepare us for specific Communication styles and tendencies we need to know about, and warn us of any conflicts or misunderstandings that can arise due to cultural incompetence.

In the presentation, you will give a researched background about the country and its communication practices.  This aspect needs to include information about Hofstede’s cultural dimensions and Hall’s context and time distinctions, as they are manifested in this other country, and how those cultural dimensions influence the communication practices.  You will also demonstrate specific communication examples to show the right and wrong things to do (see the videos provided as examples).

For the presentation, consider types of greetings, personal space, body language, any specific gender issues, time concerns, age issues, “giving” and “saving” face, displays of emotion, displays of affection; displays of respect, and notions of authority along with the cultural dimensions discussed in class.  You should make extensive use of the book, along with at least three other valid, acceptable sources.

So, in short, through research, you need to 1) explain important cultural/communication aspects of your country and 2) demonstrate proper/improper communication skills for your audience to succeed in that country.  Remember that you are an expert in the field, so you need to come across as deeply competent and credible regarding the topic.  You need to show deep understanding of cultural dimensions and your country.

Each presenter will be required to turn in 1) a program or itinerary of topic and 2) a bibliography of your sources.  No outline is required.

Countries of focus will be chosen from a list provided by the instruction.  You will sign up for your choice in a Discussion – reply with your country choice.  Choices are first come first served – no doubles on a country, and no alternatives to the list of choices provided by the instructor.  Make sure to see the Discussion for my confirmation of your Country choice.  If you do not request a Country in the Discussion, you will be assigned a country by the instructor.

The goal of the activity is to help the audience become more culturally competent and effectively address the people of this country.  In your descriptions, avoid evaluations of right and wrong, good and bad, or “natural”.   While the communication behaviors you are describing might be new and different to us, your task is to explain and demonstrate them, not to label behaviors as “weird” or “strange”.  Avoid pronouns and phrases such as “these people”.
