Wk 1 – Course Capstone Part 1: Proposal

Assignment Instructions

The 
Course Capstone Project is a research and engagement project you will complete in segments throughout the course. You are expected to complete work on your Course Capstone Project each week, with the culmination of your project being your white paper submitted in Week 6.

Imagine you are a public health consultant looking to help assess and find ways to improve an organization. You will start by identifying an actual public health organization that you are interested in learning more about and with which you are reasonably confident you will be able to access and talk to an administrator of the organization, a stakeholder who works with this organization, and a consumer of the organization’s services. As you progress from week to week on this project, you will interview these three individuals to learn about the organization’s potential gaps in service and, in the process, practice effective communication skills. Your research will also allow you to explore key leadership skills needed in an organizational health setting. Finally, you will write a white paper to make recommendations for improving the organization based on your research. The interviews you conduct with all three individuals will help to see their different perspectives, to see overlap or gaps within an organization, and to learn about communication with partners and customers.

Your tasks this week are to identify the organization you will investigate and to write a proposal for your Course Capstone Project. 

Identify a specific public health organization within a larger public health system (federal, state, or local governmental services; or nongovernmental services) that you are interested in investigating. Chapter 5 of Novick & Morrow’s Public Health Administration describes the types of public health systems and functions from which you may choose.  

Some examples of organizations within larger public health systems include:

  • A federal agency with public health functions, such as the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities within the Department of Health and Human Services
  • A state health department division, such as an injury and violence prevention division
  • A local health department function, such as an emergency response management division
  • A nonprofit organization, such as the American Lung Association or United Way
  • A nongovernmental community health center, such as one serving immigrant populations

Once you have identified an organization within a larger public health system that you would like to explore, write a 525- to 700-word proposal in which you do the following:

  • Describe the larger public health system that the organization is a part of.
  • Describe the department or organization that you will explore within this system.
  • Explain why you chose the organization and/or public health system.
  • Identify an internal administrator and external stakeholder (someone who works with but is not part of the organization you are studying) from the organization whom you will interview as part of your Capstone Project.
  • Identify a consumer who utilizes the organization’s services.
  • Explain your choice of administrator, including how they will help with identifying leadership skills, as well as a rationale for your stakeholder and consumer interviewees.

Follow applicable APA writing, citation, and formatting guidelines.
