Hearing aids are small electronic devices that can be worn behind or inside the ear. The device makes louder sounds so that people with hearing loss can hear, communicate, and participate more fully in their daily lives. It is possible to hear better in noisy or quiet situations with the aid of hearing aids. Three important components make up a hearing aid: the microphone, the amplifier, and the speaker. An amplifier receives sound waves from a microphone, which converts them into electrical signals. Through the speaker, the amplifier strengthens the signal so that it can reach the ear. There are several differences between cochlear implants and hearing aids, including their working principle. Cochlear implants are complex hearing aids. Rather than amplify sound, it stimulates the auditory nerve directly to provide the sensation of sound.

Despite its small size and complexity, the cochlear implant is a highly sophisticated electronic device. In order to make a sound, it is used by individuals who are severely deaf or hard of hearing. There are two parts to the implant. In addition to the outer part, there is also a surgically placed part underneath the skin. There are three parts to the implant: a microphone for picking up ambient sound. By using a speech processor, the microphone organizes and selects the sounds it receives. This unit consists of a transmitter and a receiver / stimulator (HLAA,2010). The transmitter receives signals from the speech processor and converts them into electrical impulses. A set of electrodes that transmit stimulation pulses to different areas of the auditory nerve.

What is their purpose?

Hair cells in the inner ear, also known as the tiny sensory cells in the inner ear, are damaged when someone suffers from hearing loss. Hearing aids improve hearing and speech comprehension in these individuals. Hearing loss of this type is known as sensorineural hearing loss. There are many causes of damage, including diseases, aging, noise, and some medications. When wearing a hearing aid, sound vibrations are amplified and enter the ear more easily. The neurons in the brain detect the largest vibrations and convert them into neural signals. Hearing loss is more severe when a person’s hair cells are damaged, so they require greater hearing aid amplification to compensate. It is true, however, that hearing aids are limited in their ability to amplify sounds. Moreover, even large vibrations cannot be converted into neural signals if the inner ear is too damaged (Tucci,2022). Hearing aids are ineffective in such situations. Hearing and processing sound and language are possible through cochlear implants. It should be noted, however, that these devices do not restore normal hearing, but instead allow us to process sounds and language and transmit them to the brain. It is not possible to restore normal hearing with an implant. In fact, it can help deaf people understand speech and represent the sounds in their environment.

Disorders caused by hearing defects.

A person’s ears consist of three main parts: the outer part, the middle part, and the inner part. He wore it to the audition. In the outer ear, sound waves enter. Upon reaching the middle ear, the tympanic membrane vibrates. Middle ear vibrations are transmitted through three small bones (called ossicles). Vibrations are transmitted to the snail-shaped organ’s inner ear. Neurons in the inner ear communicate with the brain through nerve impulses. As sounds, they are recognized by your brain. Additionally, the inner ear controls balance. Children and infants are at risk for ear infections, one of the most common diseases affecting hearing and balance. There are many reasons why you may experience tinnitus ringing in your ears, including loud noises, medications, and other factors. Dizziness and tinnitus are symptoms of Meniere’s disease. Injuries to the ear caused by changes in barometric (air) or water pressure are called ear barotraumas. It is possible to become deaf or impaired of hearing due to certain ear disorders
