Part 1

Is TikTok the New Search Engine? Discussion due M 4/21

While preparing for this week’s Information Literacy lesson related to online research, I did my own search and found an education blog post titled, “
How Gen Z is using TikTok to search for information and what it means for information literacyLinks to an external site.” by Professor and Librarian Elizabeth Brookbank.

*Keep in mind the Brookbank source is a blog post because this relates to ACCURACY and PURPOSE when evaluating sources (CRAAP Test). Ask questions like:
Does the language or tone seem biased or balanced? and
Is the information fact? opinion? propaganda?

*Keep the author’s titles in mind because they relate to AUTHORITY when evaluating sources. According to the CRAAP Test, asking questions like:
What are the author’s credentials or organizational affiliations? or
Is the author qualified to write on the topic? help you make decisions about the overall online source when doing research.

Some of the key points of her blog post

· Because more students are using social media (TikTok) to search for information instead of using search engines,

· educators should

· 1) understand how young people are using social media platforms to gather information, and

· 2) develop and adapt strategies for promoting critical thinking and information literacy skills.

In the blog post from above, Prof. Brookbank refers to New York Times article, “
For Gen Z, TikTok Is the New Search Engine
Download For Gen Z, TikTok Is the New Search Engine” by Kalley Huang, a technology reporter in San Francisco, who covers youth and technology (Again, AUTHORITY).

For this discussion board assignment, you will answer questions related to Huang’s TikTok article. (Feel free to read Prof. Brookbank’s
blog postLinks to an external site. as well for more context.)

A.

D.

E.

4.
How do you think TikTok’s short video format influences the way information is presented and consumed compared to traditional search engines like Google?

5.
The article discusses that the algorithm-driven, content recommendation systems of social media raise concerns about the accuracy and reliability of the information shared. Do you think the personalized approach to content delivery enhances or limits consumers’ use of social media for information gathering? Why or why not?

6.
Think about your personal social media use. How do you determine if the information you view is accurate? What questions come to mind? What are some “red flags” that let you know the information is “fake news?”

7.
Create a discussion question related to the article of your OWN for your peers to answer.
