MODULE 3 Discussion: Outcomes Driven Systems – Observational Data (CO# 3, 5 & 7)
Data-Driven Student Success
It is important to remember that student success should be based upon
informed practice. Districts and schools are not able to plan well for student success without reliable child-level data; that is, data that indicates outcomes for individual children, their class, school and the district as a whole. Optimally, early childhood assessment should begin with child-screening within 45 days of entry into any formal education experience and followed up with varied assessment strategies that include observations of children in all developmental domains. To learn more about this, click, subscribe and watch the Micro-lecture below.
Now that you have watched the Micro-lecture, let’s practice.
1. Observe the child nearest to the viewer to the front, right of the screen in the blue dress.
2. Complete an Anecdotal Observation of her by watching the children in the video below for 3.08 minutes
then, write all that you remember without returning to the video.
Write nothing as you watch.
3. Return to the same video and complete a 3- minute Running Record focusing on the same child. This time, w
rite all that you observe while you watch.
FOCUSED OBSERVATIONS CHAPTER 4 VIDEO 9, REDLEAF PRESS
After completing both observations, post both observations in today’s post and discuss your experience with classmates by answering these questions:
1.
1. What surprised you about the experience?
2. What were the major differences with both experiences?
3. How young is too young for formal assessments?
4. How are the results of Child Observations useful on a school/district/state/public policy level?
Start this task by the module’s initial class date and return within 2 days to view and respond to at least 2 peers’ posts. This assignment counts towards your participation grade.
Discussion Grading:
All discussions should follow netiquette guidelines. Discussion posts should be at least 250 words. The initial post should fully address all aspects of the prompt and pull from readings and videos (with at least one in-text citation) to show an understanding of the week’s content. You will also comment on 2 peers’ posts. The goal of commenting is to deepen and expand your thinking about a topic. Grading of discussions is contingent on following these guidelines.
