Read this brief report on gun violenceLinks to an external site., which highlights the high rate of gun violence in the United States compared to most countries of the world, particularly those that are most similar to us in population size and wealth.

What might explain the comparatively high rates of lethal violence, particularly with guns, in the United States? (See links at the bottom of the report for some suggestions, cite sources (these or others) to support your argument.)

What social actions/changes do you suggest to address this social problem? Why would those actions/changes be useful?

The ease of acquisition of firearms might explain the comparatively high rates of lethal violence, particularly with guns in the United States. In the US, it is easier to acquire guns compared to other countries (Fortune, 2018). The article suggests that the US does not have strong laws governing the acquisition and use of firearms. As a result, violent and other type of individuals have always found themselves in possession of firearms. These people are responsible for the higher causes of homicides in the US compared to other countries. In the US, gun violence is responsible for more than 8% of deaths among those under age 20. The high death rates mean that the gun laws are lax thereby making it easier for individuals under the age of twenty to acquire guns.

A change that is needed to address the social problem of gun violence is the enactment of stronger and stricter gun laws. According to Lois et al. (2015), there is a direct association between stronger firearms laws and a reduction in firearm homicide rates. Therefore, strengthening gun ownership laws could potentially reduce the high homicide rates in the US. Stronger and stricter gun ownership laws include compelling gun sellers to undertake serious background checks before selling guns. Besides, all gun dealers should be registered and compelled to ensure that buyers have a permit before purchasing. Gun ownership laws should also restrict the types of guns civilians can purchase or possess. For example, civilians should not be allowed to possess assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. The purpose of such a restriction is to ensure the number of fatalities in case of gun violence is as low as possible.
