Introduction
A business process is a sequence of related actions or stages intended to transform inputs into outputs in
order to accomplish a specific corporate goal. Operations management revolves around processes since
they optimize job completion, impacting cost, efficiency, and customer satisfaction. Stevenson (2021)
asserts that efficient procedures provide strategic benefits that help companies stay competitive in everchanging marketplaces. Business procedures only have difficulties since inefficiency or rigidity might
impede creativity or flexibility (Ibrahim, 2020). This essay examines the business processes’ merits and
disadvantages and offers a thorough business owner perspective on business processes for a defined
business workflow.
Definition of a Business Process
A business process is an organized set of actions or tasks that, when finished in a certain order, provide
clients with a good or service. Ensuring the effective use of resources, such as time, labor, and capital, to
achieve organizational goals is the business process’s main objective. There are three types of processes:
supporting, management, and operational. While management processes monitor the company’s
performance, operational processes handle the main business functions, including production, sales, and
customer service (Liedtka, 2020). Effectively developed business procedures have several advantages.
Business processes increase productivity by cutting down on waste and optimum available resource
utilization. Reducing manufacturing time and eliminating redundancy lowers operating expenses in the long
run (Stevenson, 2021). Process bottlenecks brought about by shoddy design might result in inefficiencies
instead of gains slowing down and losing their original purpose if activities are not well-aligned or if certain
phases depend on others that are delayed.
Practical Business Process
As the owner of an online seller of construction materials and tools, I have created a systematic order
fulfillment procedure guaranteeing effectiveness and excellence at every turn. This process has five primary
stages, beginning when a consumer makes their purchase and ending with the last post-delivery follow-up.
The system instantly acknowledges the order, and an employee confirms the order details and product
availability in the first step, known as the Order Receipt and Confirmation. Product assembly and quality
check, the second step, entails building the product following client requirements and ensuring it satisfies
quality standards, with few employees depending on the order complexity. The employees verify the
materials and do a quality evaluation. The third step includes packaging and labeling the construction
equipment to guarantee product safety, proper branding, and labeling for transportation while maintaining
the brand’s identity. The fourth step is shipping the products to the consumer, working with a logistics
company like FedEx or UPS to create shipping labels and update the customer’s tracking information.
Finally, the order processor, the assembler, and the packaging/shipping handlers engage in client support
and any after-sales services where the company follows up with the client to ensure their satisfaction and
address any possible problems. Roles are assigned, and every step is well defined, making the workflow
efficient and guaranteeing that clients receive prompt, high-quality service, especially considering the fact
that, in some small companies, such roles overlap (Stevenson, 2021).
Conclusion
In light of the above, business processes are the foundation of operational management because they offer
an organized method for transforming inputs into outputs, and through uniformity, they enhance customer
happiness and boost efficiency while lowering expenses. Nevertheless, inefficiencies and creativity
deficiencies lead to insufficient consistency and misaligned processes. My online construction material and
equipment store business process analysis has shown that a well-structured process guarantees efficient
order handling, with every step being precisely defined and supported by assigned responsibilities.
Organizations improve their workflows to facilitate long-term development and flexibility by acknowledging
the advantages as well as possible drawbacks of business processes.
